Michael Vick: 10 Reasons He'll Lead Philadelphia To the Super Bowl

Tom KinslowSep 22, 2010

Now that Michael Vick is the starting quarterback in Philadelphia, there's just one question:

How far can he take the Eagles?

It's only Week 3, but we're starting to get a feel for some of the teams in the league. We'll start to get a better feeling for Philly in the next few weeks.

Vick has put a spark into the Eagles, and he's proven he can make plays for the team.

It has divided the fanbase between pro-Kolb people and pro-Vick people, and the latter believe he can lead the Eagles to great things.

If you're part of that group, here are 10 reasons to back up the argument that Vick can lead the Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl.

No. 10: Experience

If there's one thing that Mike Vick has proved in his time as an NFL quarterback, it's that he can win the big game.

Vick went into Lambeau against Brett Favre and walked away with a win. He led Atlanta to the NFC Championship Game, where he lost to Philadelphia.

But while Vick wasn't the most spectacular player in terms of passing ability, he was able to win big games for the Falcons.

Having the experience of coming up big in the biggest games of the season is something the Eagles haven't really had at quarterback.

No offense to Donovan McNabb, but I'd never use the word clutch to describe him.

No. 9: Intangibles

The play that pretty much summed up why Vick is the better short-term choice (allow me to stress short-term) for the Eagles is a play he made against the Lions last week.

A Lions defender came in untouched, and Vick instinctively swirled away from the defender and made a play for positive yardage.

That's an instinctive play, and not something that can be taught. Those are the plays Vick can make for the Eagles that Kevin Kolb simply cannot.

That's not to say that Kolb isn't or won't be a good player. It's just that he doesn't have that gene in him, and Vick does.

No. 8: Faith Of Players

It's clear that the Eagles believe in Vick to lead them to wins.

And why shouldn't they?

Vick brought the offense to life against Green Bay, and got them back into the game. Then he goes out the next week and gets them a win against Detroit on the road.

Vick has made great plays for them with his arm and his legs, and I'd believe in him, too, if I were a member of the Eagles. While I am certainly sympathetic with Kevin Kolb, and I'm sure some of his teammates are, too, just look at a highlight reel to see why they believe.

Last week was against the Lions, Vick could simply do things that Kolb can't, and that's why he has the faith of his team.

No. 7: Playing For a Contract

Michael Vick is a free agent after this season, and he knows that he has to play well to earn a deal from the Eagles as the starter, or another team in the same role.

That type of motivation usually inspires the best in a player (much to the ire of said team's fans), and I think that's going to happen with Vick.

It's not like he's getting any younger. He needs to strike while the iron is hot, and he will have no better opportunity than he does right now.

Vick has been the topic of conversation for the past two weeks, and if he keeps playing the way he has, he will continue to be as his NFL rebirth continues.

No. 6: Improved Skills

Looking at Michael Vick's performances against Green Bay and Detroit, one thing stuck out above the rest: The quarterback's speed around the corner, which has finally returned.

Vick has turned into a passing threat. Before, Vick would try and make things happen with his legs before he gave the play a chance to develop.

Now, I'm seeing Vick looking downfield, setting his feet, and making a throw down the field. Not only that, but they're good throws.

It's something we haven't seen from Vick in his career, and it's impressive to see.

No. 5: Weapons

Name one great player Michael Vick had at his disposal other than Alge Crumpler in his time at Atlanta.

I'll wait.

No, seriously. I want one.

Well, there was none. Roddy White was just starting to come into his own, and other than that, it was just a lot of lackluster players in Atlanta.

Now, Vick has DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Brent Celek, and LeSean McCoy.

It's a high-powered offense with a lot of targets for Vick to choose from. Jackson has already talked about the connection he and Vick have, and it's only going to get stronger as the year goes on.

No. 4: NFC East Struggles

After two weeks, I must say, I'm less than impressed with the NFC East.

The Cowboys are winless, the Redskins just let Matt Schaub throw for more yards, and the Giants just got obliterated on national television by the Colts. While the Eagles almost let Detroit steal the game, they hung tough with Green Bay once Michael Vick came into the game.

I don't think it's going out on a limb to say that, with the division looking a little down early, the Eagles could walk away with a division crown.

It wasn't expected coming into the season, but the more these teams play, the more likely it looks.

No. 3: NFC Contenders Struggling

Not only is the NFC East struggling, but so are some of the favorites to compete for the NFC title.

Minnesota is an a total tailspin, and just look lost out on the field, with a tough schedule upcoming. I've already talked about Dallas' struggles, and even New Orleans has been a little lackluster in its victories.

I'm still confused about the Saints' fullback dive call on third down late in the game on Monday.

Green Bay has looked as good as advertised, but it needs to be stressed that the Packers beat the hapless Bills last week. I'll need to see more from the Packers before I sign on completely.

With Ryan Grant hurt, that could change the complexion of everything in the NFC picture.

No. 2: Speed Kills

With the addition of Vick under center, it gives Philadelphia one thing it hadn't had in a long time until recently: speed.

With Vick, DeSean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin, the Eagles are loaded with burners who can break big plays at a moment's notice. That's a scary thing to think about defending.

Think about all of those games the Eagles lost where you thought, if they just had one guy who could get separation, they'd have had a better chance to win.

Now, the Eagles have that, and it's going to be tough on opposing defenses.

No. 1: Opens Up the Offense

To be honest, the Eagles need Michael Vick in their offense.

The offensive line cannot protect anyone, and Philly needs someone who can avoid the pressure and make plays.

As you could tell from the huge clump of grass stuck in his helmet during Week 1, Kevin Kolb isn't that type of player. Not only does Vick help with the shoddy offensive-line play, it gives the Eagles plenty of options on offense.

When you have a dynamic player like Vick, you can move him all over the field and use him to make plays.

Vick is now Philly's biggest weapon, and he's going to draw attention away from the Eagles' speedy wideouts and allow them to get separation down the field.
