WWE Night Of Champions Review: Welcome to The Age Of Orton

Graham GSM MatthewsSep 20, 2010

I don't usually do reviews of paper-views, but since I ordered it anyway, I've decided to give it a quick review.

1. Dolph Ziggler def. Kofi Kingston (Still Intercontinental Champion)

-It was a great opener at SummerSlam and it proved to be another great opener last night at Night of Champions. Despite the continuous matches every single week, I've enjoyed this feud, especially since these two work very well together. It got great time, and the ending was decent but not predictable. Hopefully this puts end to a feud and Kofi moves on to feud with Swagger possibly, and Dolph can go on to defend against MVP or Hardy.

2. Big Show def. CM Punk

-The promo was needed seeing the reaction he got, a HUGE face reaction. I smiled when I heard it since I'm a CM Punk fan, and laughed (in a good way) at his promo to get some heat, although they did continue to cheer him.

The time was short but sweet, but something we would see on Smackdown. This is the best match Punk has had since he Mysterio match on PPV cause he really tried to make it entertaining, it he was successful. Both hit great spots, but a predictable finish. I'm disappointed Punk didn't win to get him some momentum out of this losing streak, especially since Big Show has nothing to do anyway.

3. Daniel Bryan def. The Miz (New United States Champion)

-Now this is where my title comes into play. RAW got really shaken up with all of its titles changing hands, and this plays a big role. This was the best match of the night for me. What are my factors for match of the night? 1) Liked the finish 2)Liked the content and 3) How much I stood up out of my chair going crazy on how near the falls were and the spots hit.

Needless to say, this match hit all three components. Not only was I happy causing I am meeting Daniel Bryan at a Indy event next week, but he deserved it. It was not 100% logical he would win the title, but I very glad he did. This gives Miz a chance to cash in his briefcase now, which I still think he should wait a little while longer for.

The finish was spectacular when Miz waited to tap out, showing he is not a weak champion. The Alex Riley interference was well played as well. Hope to see more from these two such as this match if the rivalry continues.

4. Michelle McCool def. Melina in a LumberJill Match (New Unified Divas Champion)

-First off, this was the best Divas match I've seen in this new era of crappy Divas wrestling (for the last two years or so). Melina and McCool are the best Divas currently in WWE, along with Layla. I was surprised Layla being the actual champion didn't play a role in this, but maybe it will unveil alter down the road.

Anyway, the Lumberjills actually did something! I know, surprising! They fans popped when they went crazy on Michelle, but since WWE has made their Diva matches a common bad thing, no one cared when they should of. Logical finish, but I would of liked to see Melina win the belt and put an end to Lay-cool, but again, with the move to Syfy, Smackdown needs champions.

This REALLY affects RAW's Divas division as if they have a lot more Divas than Smackdown, what if Lay-Cool just stays on Smackdown? The title was the only thing that made anything in Divas Matches important, so no rivalries but just matches? BORING!

5. Kane def. The Undertaker in a No Holds Barred Match (Still World Heavyweight Champion)

-This wasn't really a wrestling match as it was a brawl, but it was one hell of a fight. I'm glad they added the extra stip, otherwise it would have been a lot less exciting. Undertaker really sold the injuries at the hands of Kane, and that is great that Taker will finally someone actually get ahead in a feud for once.

It was very logical Kane would win, which is good, cause no one wanted a quick surprise where Taker won. Taker will have his chance down the road, and I can't wait for their supposable rematch at Hell in a Cell.

6. Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes def. The Hart Dynasty, The Usos, Evan Bourne & Mark Henry, and Santino Marella & Vladmir Kozlov in a Tag Team Turmoil (New WWE Tag Team Champions)

-Like I've seen in other reports, no one cared about this match. Probably due to letting us know that the title would be on the line on Smackdown, and not announcing the actual match until it happened. The Hart Dynasty are great wrestlers, but terrible champions to the point where they don't defend their titles and rarely are on RAW. I am glad we had new champions, especially with the move to SyFy.

The in-ring action was good until the last with Rhodes and McIntyre vs. Bourne and Henry. This leaves RAW without tag team champions. Hopefully, a feud will develop between the teams cross-brand.

Wait, weren't Dudebusters and Archer and Hawkins supposed to be in this match? Wasn't that the whole point of their series on Superstars?!

7. Randy Orton def. Sheamus, Wade Barrett, John Cena, Edge, and Chris Jericho in a six-pack challenge (New WWE Champion)

-A good match, but confusing and quick with eliminations. The whole Chirs Jericho retirement thing was really screwed up, and they didn't even focus on correcting it. The order of eliminations was logical, and Orton winning was only a little shocking as I saw either him winning or Sheamus.

Is Orton really then next John Cena? We'll see in upcoming months. Hopefully he gets a good reign, unless Miz cashes in to start a feud. I thought the match would a little more exciting than this, but it still passed as a hit.

Final Review: Great show. Definitely best show of the summer since Wrestlemania, with solid matches. Again, it wasn't the best, but it was improvement and surprising since it was a minor PPV. This is my favorite gimmick paper-view with little flaws and a good lineup, so hopefully it is as good next year and is not scrapped. Hell in a Cell in two weeks is rushing things, so scheduling should have been better. I vote this 8/10.
