Fantasy Football Rankings: Top 10 Fantasy Football Rookies of 2010

Ethan NorofSep 20, 2010

1. Jahvid Best, RB Detroit Lions

Best has made his presence felt fast in the fantasy football world, with five touchdowns in his first two career games as a pro.

Looking like the explosive runner that he was in college against the Eagles, Best torched the defense for nine receptions, 154 yards, and a TD. Adding 17 carries for another 78 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Clearly the center point of the Lions' offensive attack, Best has a starter's upside, as he's got nobody to challenge his workload.

2. Mike Williams, WR Tampa Bay Buccaneers

My favorite sleeper heading into the season, Williams is a star in the making and has Bucs fans very excited. He's being targeted early and often by QB Josh Freeman, as he's clearly the No. 1 receiving option.

Helping guide the Bucs to their surprising 2-0 start, Williams has emerged as a redzone threat and a legitimate second wide receiver in the majority of standard leagues.

With a rather thin receiving corps behind him, the former Orangeman will continue to make the opposition wonder why they didn't roll the dice on draft day.

3. Sam Bradford, QB St. Louis Rams

After Bradford threw 55 attempts in the opener, coach Steve Spagnuolo cut the rookie's workload back considerably in Week 2, calling just 25 pass attempts.

Despite throwing for just 167 yards as compared to his 253 in the opener, Bradford was actually better in Week 2, throwing for two touchdowns and just one interception.

With a 3:3 TD:INT ratio and 420 yards, Bradford's (currently) limited fantasy appeal only has room for growth as he continues to adjust to play at the NFL level.

4. Dez Bryant, WR Dallas Cowboys

After owner Jerry Jones missed out on Randy Moss in the 1998 draft, he made sure not to make the same mistake twice with phenom Dez Bryant.

Clearly an integral part of the Cowboys' offensive attack, Bryant is averaging 54 yards receiving and his role should continue to grow as the season moves forward.

It's just a matter of time until Bryant replaces Roy Williams in the starting lineup and his true fantasy potential is unleashed to the world.

5. Ryan Mathews, RB San Diego Chargers

Receiving the most hype of any rookie in fantasy circles across the globe, Mathews continues to be overvalued by most of his owners.

While the Fresno State product is certainly no slouch, it's clear that he still has some learning to do if he hopes to sustain success throughout the season.

Unable to generate much against a mediocre Chiefs run defense in Week 1, Mathews exited Week 2's affair after just five carries due to an ankle injury.

With Seattle, Arizona, Oakland, and St. Louis on tap for the next four weeks, Mathews will look to live up to his billing as a borderline first round pick.

Remember that former Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson was "washed-up" by many last year, and so far he's averaging 2.1 YPC better than the rookie.

6. Demaryius Thomas, WR Denver Broncos

After sitting out Week 1 with his ever-troublesome foot, Thomas showed in Week 2 why he was drawing comparisons to the departed WR Brandon Marshall just before April's draft.

Hauling in eight balls for 97 yards and a touchdown, Thomas' length, much like Marshall's, could be a continuous problem for opposing corners all year.

Owners who were willing to gamble on him at the back end of drafts look fairly smart right about now but they should temper expectations, as he's no lock to produce this way each week.

7. Jermaine Gresham, TE Cincinnati Bengals

While his statistics might not show much, Gresham's ability and raw talent are undeniable.

With Gresham having a legitimate chance to establish himself as a borderline No. 1 TE by midseason, QB Carson Palmer is going to look his way often in the middle of the field.

If the running game continues to sputter, Gresham is going to become even more important to the Bengals' attack when attempting to move the chains.

He's got a very high football IQ, and while he probably shouldn't be rostered outside of deep 12-team leagues, he could very well be one of the hottest waiver wire pickups of the year when (not if) his role grows more prominent.

8. Aaron Hernandez, TE New England Patriots

Perhaps the lone bright spot of the Pats' Week 2 loss to the division rival Jets, Hernandez showcased his athleticism by grabbing passes all over the gridiron.

With his first 100-yard receiving game now in the books, Hernandez's role will expand as the season moves forward and he continues to earn QB Tom Brady's trust.

Owners should simply keep him in mind for the time being, but Tim Tebow's former favorite target at Florida will carve out a significant role in the Patriots' offensive scheme. New England used two-TE sets for 40 of 61 offensive snaps in Week 2.

9. Dexter McCluster, RB/WR Kansas City Chiefs

Based on potential alone, McCluster is No. 1 on the list, but unfortunately for his owners, fantasy football championships are not won based on potential.

With veteran RB Thomas Jones and prolific youngster Jamaal Charles sitting in front of him on the depth chart, McCluster won't be receiving any carries anytime soon barring injury.

If McCluster can prove as electric on offense as he has on kickoff and punt returns, the fantasy world will simply be amazed at what the tiny talent is capable of doing.

10. Jordan Shipley, WR Cincinnati Bengals

Even though he hasn't been receiving much love from fantasy insiders, Shipley has proved to be a very productive option out of the slot thus far for the Bengals.

After collecting 82 yards on five catches in the opener, Shipley raked in another five and 42 yards in Week 2.

Doing his best Wes Welker imitation, the Texas product could turn quite a few heads by midseason.

Perhaps those in need of a boost at the position should give Shipley a look before it's too late and he's scooped up by another educated owner.
