5 Things That Didn't Suck About Mosley Vs Mora
“Ladies and gentlemen, this fight was not a draw. This decision sucks.” Jim Lampley, HBO Boxing Ringside Commentator
If on Saturday, September 18th, 2010 you weren’t at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA – and if you didn’t shell out the $44.95 to watch to the snoozefest that was “Sugar” Shane Mosley (46 wins, 6 loses and 1 draw) chasing Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (22 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws) around the ring, well, consider yourself lucky. It sucked.
The judges sucked. They scored the bout a draw with Judge Kermit Bayless gifting 115 to 113 for Mora, Judge David Denkin scoring it 116 to 112 for Mosley and Judge Lou Moret giving it 114 to 114.
There will be lots of articles today and over the next few days that will pour over the painfully sucky suckness of this fight, but man cannot live on suck alone … ok, there’s probably a better way of saying that, but you get the gist.
Let’s look at the positive side. Let’s take a look at 5 things that didn’t suck about the fight between Shane Mosley and Sergio Mora:
(5) Sergio Mora’s Walk In Music. Didn’t suck. You had the cool clip of Luther (David Patrick Kelly) from the 1979 movie “The Warriors” with the bottles clanking and the iconic “Warrrrrrrriorrrs – come out and plaaaaay-yaaay”, then the start of the Doors “5 to 1”. That’s some badass walk in music.
Looking back, it’s interesting, kind of a foreshadowing of the night in that Luther was also a gutless puss puss who spent most of the movie not fighting.
(4) HBO’s Commentators. Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant did an amazing job with such a horrible fight. From the very first few moments when Larry commented on Mora’s patella brace, and all throughout the evening as the pair commented on how awful this affair was. At the end of the night both Merchant and Lampley were brutally honest and just as outraged as we were.
“Atrocious … absolutely atrocious. A joke, a travesty, an injustice, a terrible decision … horrible” - Jim Lampley, telling it like it is.
(3) The Crowd. The crowd was great. They emphatically booed from start to finish. They cheered and applauded when necessary. They were always engaged and always participating. Thank you. You folks made the fight almost bearably watchable.
(2) Sergio Mora’s Audition (For Leonardo DiCaprio) To Be In Inception II.
“…yes, I thought I won the fight. I thought I did enough to win the decision.”
Mora thought he won the fight by “at least 2 rounds.” Clearly he was dreaming. He was trapped inside a dream and that’s what fight he saw in his minds eye. And being that the fight was in Los Angeles he was no doubt auditioning for a role to be in Inception II and, truth be told, he did an excellent job! He was completely genuine and authentic in telling us that he thought he won that fight. Amazing acting!
If you taped the PPV event, watch Jim Lampley right after Mora’s audition. Jim simply says “wow”. Even he sees the De Niro type acting chops coming from Sergio Mora.
For you Sergio haters or skeptics who think he wasn’t acting, are you actually going to sit there and tell us that he meant it? That would make him either completely insane or an absolute moron. Please, we wont hear it. We’re keeping things positive here. You can’t tell us that Sergio Mora is an utter idiot and a buffoon or that he has no working knowledge of how boxing is scored.
Finally, the number 1 thing that didn’t suck about Mosley v Mora:
(1) Sergio Mora Getting Punched In The Face. Mora ran the entire night, but every now and then “Sugar” Shane popped him in the face! It was great to see the guy responsible for ruining the fight, and sullying the good memory of a great undercard getting punched in the face! THAT did NOT suck.
