Michael Vick: 10 Reasons He Must Continue As Philadelphia Eagles Starting QB

Nathaniel UySep 19, 2010

Don't look now, but the Philadelphia Eagles appear to be a really good team with threats at every position capable of making a splash this season–we're talking playoffs and beyond.

Despite a 1-1 record to start the season; the Michael Vick–led Eagles are now on a roll.

The fans are already feeling the excitement and if the Eagles were smart, they wouldn't even consider giving the starting job back to Kevin Kolb.

Here are 10 reasons why Vick should continue as the Eagles starter.

10. Better Than Kevin Kolb

Dear Kevin, It was nice knowing you.

After taking the reins from Donovan McNabb, Kolb was looking forward to establishing himself as a starting quarterback in the league.

He left last weeks game with a concussion and remains out.

His stats from the first half of last week's game: 5/10, 35 yards, 0TDs

Most importantly, the Eagles were already losing with Kolb in charge. The Green Bay Packers had taken a 13-3 lead at the end of the half and eventually won the game 27-20.

Vick's second half passing stats, 16/25, 175 yards, 1 TD, were much more impressive than Kolb's.

9. Dual-Threat

After taking over at quarterback for Kolb, Vick was effective as a passer and also a threat on the ground.

Vick ran the ball 11 times for 103 yards in trying to help the team come back against the Packers.

Kolb? He has accumulated a total of eight rushing yards in his four-year career.

8. Helps The Running Game

VIck's presence immensely improves the Eagles running game.

Not only can he escape pressure and scramble for important yards, he also has a positive effect on his running back.

With Vick viewed as a threat to run almost every time he touches the ball, the focus shifted away from his running back.

This perception allowed LeSean McCoy to break out with the best game of his young career.

McCoy carried the ball 16 times, for 120 yards and 3 TD's.

7. Opens Up The Passing Game

With their running game earning respect from opponents, Vick is also able help the team with his arm.

Vick is a freak athlete and creates mismatches whenever he has the ball.

As a running threat, more passing lanes are opened for his receivers.  And Vick has been able to establish a solid rapport with his young up-and-coming receiver DeSean Jackson.

Jackson emerged as his best receiver against the Lions by posting 4 receptions for 135 yards and 1 TD.

6. Improves The Whole Team

They are a much better team with Michael Vick.

Sure, it was a game against the Detroit Lions, but Vick was able to showcase exactly what he can do to improve a team.

As a passer, he was efficient: 21/34, 284 yards and 2 TDs.

As a runner, he added a new dimension: 7 carries for 37 yards.

But his most important contribution was that his top rusher and number one receiver had great games with him in charge.

5. Growth As A Leader, No Longer Selfish

Despite his past history, he gives the team a proven leader and a three-time Pro-Bowler that can influence his teammates in a positive way.

With a group of young core players, Vick's experience and insight is important.

This is something that Kolb doesn't have to offer.

Gone is the air of arrogance that sometimes had the tendency to alienate other teammates.  Vick now employs a team-first attitude instead of a me-first persona.

4. More Maturity, Better Decisions

At 30 years old, he is a more mature player now than he ever has been.

Vick has evolved as player now with Philadelphia than when he was with the Atlanta Falcons.

He stands in the pocket longer, shows that he can put his trust in his teammates and has been less likely to make poor decisions when under pressure.

3. Perfect As a Starter

He's 1-0 so far as the starter this year.

And if you consider last week's performance, with Vick in charge, the Eagles actually outscored the Packers 17-14 in the second half.

The man has been perfect so far.  If you're part of the Eagles coaching staff, you can't ruin a good thing.

2. Rare And Electric Player

Players like him only come around once a generation.

He was considered to be one of the best players in the league at one point in his career.

But he blew it all.

He's served his time and now he's back.  The Eagles have him at their disposal and they need to use him.

He may be older and more mature from life's experiences, but he's still electric.

1. Sells Tickets and Wins Fans

Take a look at both Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb.

Who do you think is more likely to win fans and sell jerseys?

Excitement sells tickets and merchandise; and the Eagles management would love to capitalize.

Not only does Vick makes this team and his teammates better, but also makes the Eagles a very exciting team.

With him as the starter, the Eagles will sell plenty of Vick jerseys in no time!
