Floyd Mayweather's Legal Problems Could Lead To Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley Fight Next Year

Leo ReyesSep 18, 2010

The world's most wanted boxing fight between undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao may not happen after all as new charges continue to build up on Mayweather following his assault on his former girlfriend Josie Harris, who is the mother of his three children.

The charges could lead to a jail term for Mayweather which could prevent him from facing Pacquiao next year for the world's richest fight in boxing history.

Mayweather's eventual failure to face Pacquiao next year may lead to a possible fight, instead, between Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.

Veteran boxing commentator Larry Merchant said that if Mayweather remains unavailable after Pacquiao’s super welterweight fight against Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13, chances are that the Filipino would fight Mosley.

“What if, for example Pacquiao beats Margarito and Mayweather is unavailable for whatever reason, personal, legal problems .... Mosley would probably be the best choice for a good fight that Pacquiao could make at the time,” Merchant said in an interview with DogHouseBoxing.com.

Mosley is scheduled to face Sergio Mora in a few hours and if he wins over Mora, his chances of facing the world's most popular boxer increases.

Mosley has been chasing Pacquiao since last year when the Filipino boxer pummeled Miguel Cotto to submission in the 11th round.

Meanwhile, Mosley said Mayweather could have avoided the problems he is facing right now if he agreed to sign up to fight Pacquiao.

"He should have stayed in boxing and taken that fight with Manny Pacquiao," Mosley said in a report posted on NYDailyNews.com

"When you're not fighting or getting ready to fight you start to lose focus and you start getting into trouble," he added.
