The Jayhawks got a stiff test in Lawrence from head coach Larry Fedora’s Golden Eagles last season in the programs first ever meeting falling 35-28. The Golden Eagles were only outgained by 38 yards (433-395), and if not for a pair of red zone turnovers, could have pulled the outright shocker.

With the Jayhawks now set to pay a visit to one of CUSA’s more hostile venues, the recipe is ripe for the Golden Eagles to get their revenge. Oddsmakers think they get it done as well installing them nearly TD college football pick favorites after going off the board as 13-point underdogs a year ago.

That said; the Jayhawks enter this battle off an upset of the then top 25 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets whom they toppled with a completely reinvigorated offense with Jordan Webb at the controls.

The redshirt frosh had a big day against the Ramblin Wreck’s defense throwing for 179 yards and three TDs with just one INT in his first career start. Leaps and bounds better than what Kale Pick churned out against North Dakota State in what’s certain to be his final start of the season.

Also adding a boost to KU’s offensive attack was freshman running back James Sims who had a TD and 101 yards on 17 carries; he didn’t suit up the previous week. Webb’s favorite target of the game was cornerback turned wide receiver Daymond Patterson who electrified the Memorial Stadium crowd on a number of his seven receptions for 85 yards and a score.

Though the defense was gouged by the Yellow Jackets option attack led by stud Josh Nesbitt, it buckled down in the second half giving up just eight points to pull the 28-25 outright shocker as double-digit home pups.

Southern Miss flexed its muscles against FCS rep Prairie View A&M, but got rolled up when it went into Columbia, SC and paid a visit to the Gamecocks. Most alarming was the fact that it was gouged on the ground to the tune of 224 yards. It will be interesting to see how this unit holds up against a Jayhawks offense that displayed a balanced attack last week.

NCAA Football Insider Tip: Tonight’s game presents a very interesting challenge for head coach Turner Gill’s young squad. It’s the first road game for many, and with inexperienced players at the QB and RB position, I think it will take a toll on the final outcome of the game. Southern Miss killed itself on a number of occasions in last season’s meeting with Kansas, and that will be an extreme motivating factor for them tonight.
