2010 Fantasy Football Week 2: Sit 'Ems

Bruno Boys Fantasy FootballSep 17, 2010

A lot of stuff happened in the first week of the 2010 NFL season, including some injuries to key players like Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb and Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant. Kolb sustained a concussion and though he will return to the football field this season, it likely won’t be this week. Grant’s situation is more grim. An ankle injury will keep him sidelined until next year.

The surprising thing is, both Kolb’s and Grant’s backups aren’t bad starts this week. However, the purpose for this article isn’t to tell you about the solid matchups, it’s to help you realize who to avoid each week. Bad matchup or a lack of opportunity, the players who made our Fantasy Football Sit ‘Em list should be used with caution in Week 2.

5-Year Redraft

David Garrard (Jacksonville Jaguars) @ San Diego Three touchdown passes against the Denver Broncos means Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is back, right? Well, it’s too early to say either way but one thing that’s for sure is he’s not a good start against the San Diego Chargers this week. Garrard only have five multiple-touchdown games last season and none of them were in consecutive games. In fact, each of those multiple-touchdown games last season was followed up by a game with no touchdown passes. If there’s one thing that’s been the calling card of Garrard the last couple of years it’s been his inconsistency from game to game. Don’t risk it just because he played well in Week 1.

C.J. Spiller (Buffalo Bills) @ Green Bay

For as good as Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller looked at times during the preseason, he flashed none of that ability in a Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins. In that game he rushed seven times for six yards and no, that is not a typo. Indeed, he only gained six yards on seven carries. Now, Spiller is not going to be that bad all season and there are going to be some games where he explodes. This week, however, is not one of them. The Bills travel to Green Bay to face a Packer defense that is very stout against the run. Last week the Packers limited Philadelphia Eagles running backs to 35 yards on eight carries. There’s no need to drop Spiller after his disastrous performance last week, but it’s a good idea to keep him on the bench this week.

It’s hard to fathom sitting one of the league’s elite receivers any week of the season, but this is one of those times you can strongly consider it. New England receiver Randy Moss is good almost all the time, except when he faces the Jets and more specifically Darrelle Revis. Last year the Jets stuck Revis against Moss one-on-one and in two games and Moss combined to catch just nine passes for 58 yards and one touchdown. Revis simply gets the better of Moss. We wouldn’t be confident in starting any receiver against Revis, and Moss is no exception. We know it’s only Week 2 and we are a believer in “Starting Your Studs”, however, if you’ve got options, Moss might be better left on your bench this week.
