Oklahoma Sooners: Ready To Take Over The Big 12 In 2010

Christian ChildressSep 16, 2010

Two weeks into the 2010 season the Oklahoma Sooners should feel confident but not too confident. The offense has absolutely clicked. Making comparisons by many to the 2008 offense lead by Sam Bradford.

It all starts with the dreaded O-line. Since May of 2009 the O-line was all anyone could talk about. How BAD the O-line was. Well it's changed in 2010 and it's brought OU hope again.

Last year Oklahoma started 10 different O-line combinations. This year there starting one with a three man tackle rotation.

Skill makers for OU happens to be our strongest area. Ryan Broyles already has 22 receptions in two games and Demarco Murray is #11 in the country in rushing yards on the season. Also, Cam Kenney has had a very good start of the year for a guy who needs to prove himself as a senior.

On to Landry Jones, the most talked about sooner this year by far. Landry had a shaky start against Utah State but completely man handled Florida State going 30-40 with 4 TD's. The question is which Landry will show up the rest of the season? I have much reason to believe the Florida State version thanks to excellent quarterback coaching by Josh Heupel.

Our backups so far are actually making plays as well. Mossis Madu has done well backing up Murray. As well as Brennan Clay and Jermie Calhoun getting playing time as well.

At receiver DeJuan Miller and Kenny Stills have been reliable coming in as the number three and four guys. With Stills ready for a breakout year according to the Oklahoma Diehards.

On the defensive side of the ball we looked terrible week one but then we dominated a potent offense in Florida State. Our D-Line is one of the best in the country with Jeremy Beal as the anchor. Adrian Taylor is solid in the interior with Casey McGee next to him. Also, Frank Alexander should be back to 100% this week making a very big difference against the Air Force option attack.

The linebacking corps is by far my favorite part of this team. Travis Lewis is.....well he's Travis Lewis. The most reliable of any of our defensive players and the true leader of a much more aggressive defense. In the middle we have Tom Wort AKA "The British Boz". Yes he had two personal fouls in his first game at the collegiate level. Hmm I wonder why he draws comparisons to the Boz? Wort is a true football player who plays with a passion and fire in him. And the there's a fan favorite in Ronnell "THE HAMMER" Lewis. Ronnell is an interesting player in the fact that he's playing quite a bit off the edge as a pass rusher. I wouldn't be surprised to see Coach Venables use him there a lot this year.

Ahh the secondary the most criticized group after week one changes to the most praised after week two. The safeties are solid lead by Quinton Carter. Those guys we have no worries with. Its Flemming and Nelson that give sooner fans worries. Both had bad outings against USU but both also rebounded against FSU most notably Flemming. Hopefully these guys will continue to grow but I know after Air Force we won't have anything new to say on these two.

Special teams is much improved from last year. Tress Way is a BEAST at punter. Kickoff coverage has been good and punt coverage has been great. Especially against Jeff Reid last week leaving him with a 1.6 yd. average leaving Norman. Patrick O' Hara hasn't been great at place kicker but he hasn't been bad either and that's all we need.

All in all the Sooners look very good this year and I think they'll beat Texas October 2nd in Dallas and go on to win the Big 12 South.

But I guess only time will tell if the Sooners are for real.
