Kentucky Fans Are MISSING The POINT!!

As much as I, (a Louisville fan) would love to point at UK fans and give them the ole Nelson Muntz ha-HA!! It's not due yet; but, I have noticed that UK fans everywhere are missing the big picture behind the whole Bledsoe situation. I can look at this thing and say two things for sure. (1) This is, in no way, the UK compliance department's fault; because, the NCAA cleared him before he ever set foot on the hardwood. (2) This has nothing to do with right or wrong and everything to do with Calipari being the most hated man in college hoops.

I look around different message boards or blogs and all I see are UK fans saying how "unfair" it would be for the NCAA to punish them for this supposed fake grade. I see them defending John and his recruiting tactics every which way but loose. I see them talking about how all of his past school's infractions occurred outside of his control; in much the same way the Magical Bledsoe A occurred during a night class in Birmingham. While all of these points are valid they are merely the mole hills to the mountain.

Fact is, you can't go around stepping on toes all day long and at the same time, not expect to get a fat lip eventually. This whole thing started because some "anonymous sources" from other universities, who were probably coaches, started chirpping to any reporter who'd listen. I can hear them now, telling that reporter from New York how Bledsoe's high school coach was a bad guy who wanted money from coaches just to talk to his kid. It's the same story in the Anthony Davis situation.

In the Davis case, once again, three separate "university officials" claimed that the Davis family wanted cash for a commitment. In the case of Enes Kanter, "anonymous sources" are, as we speak, coming out of the wood work. Most to claim they all knew he was a pro years ago, that's why they didn't go after him. Are we seeing the pattern here?

There are a couple of factors at play here which I'd be concerned with if I was a UK fan but, I wouldn't be that worried about Bledsoe. If I was a UK fan I would be far more concerned with in the BIG PICTURE, instead UK fans are focused on the situation at hand, and how "unfair" it is. Some infractions may indeed be coming for the 2009-2010 team. However, the more I read the more I think UK will escape any punishment, the fact is UK played this one by the book.

With that being said, we are one year into the glory of Cal, and here we are talking about possible infractions. It's not because (contrary to popular belief in this state) the world hates UK and wishes they could be them. The College Basketball world hates you because of who leads you, the NCAA hates you because of who leads you, and other coaches hate you because of who leads you.

You can't really expect a vindictive organization to be jazzed up about their weak/ useless perception which Cal has helped to perpetuate. there was that whole walking away from two vacated Final Four seasons unscathed thing. That's twice, twice in the history of the NCAA's biggest event, that your guy has given it a black eye. You also can't expect other coaches, ADs, schools, and fans to be thrilled when they invest BIG-BIG dollars into recruiting kids who are wooed away by World Wide Wes and Nike shoe money at the last moment. Especially when the kids have never even set foot in Lexington or, met John Boy for that matter.

For the immediate future, the thing which should be most concerning to UK fans is that although the NCAA looks to be just as responsible for this as anyone, Fear the Huskie. New NCAA President Mark Emmert is a University of Washington alum and just finished a term as their acting president. Set aside his newly proclaimed "tough stance on rule breakers" and their "need to clean up College Basketball recruiting."

Mr. Emmert was probably pretty ticked off when two top 10 recruits, who had verbally committed to his Alma mater, jumped ship for UK in the eleventh hour. In the event that it hadn't occurred to anyone, college basketball is big business. When a school gives a kid a basketball scholarship it's done with the hopes that he'll help the school make money. It's an investment. Schools also have to invest money to pursue these recruits. These shenanigans, with respect to "the Most Powerful Man in Sports" and Nike, have worn thin with a lot of coaches, athletic directors, and university presidents. The difference between Mr. Emmert and the rest is, he's in an position to stick it to Calipari.

Let us not forget, logic doesn't apply to the NCAA. They are a governing body which means they make the rules and can enforce them any way they see fit.They cleared Rose but later went back later and ruled him ineligible. The NCAA answers to no one; and there certainly seems to be no need for Viagra to get NCAA officials or Coaches to go after your Calipari.

This has nothing to do with right or wrong, we all know that College Basketball recruiting has been dirty for a loooong time, all schools bend the rules. Calipari will always and forever be under the media/NCAA microscope, this is a given. So the question then becomes: can John Calipari be not just clean, but crazy-squeaky clean? I say it's impossible for him at this point; and, the constant drama which he has no control over is the proof. This too may pass but, how long till something else is looming?
