Brett Favre Versus Green Bay, Where The Pack Went Wrong

Ryan NelsonAug 11, 2008

Okay, I know it's over and done with, but I can't get over how poorly Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers treated their hero over the course of the comeback process. Brett Favre is a 3-time MVP, Super Bowl winner, and 1st Ballot Hall of Fame QB. All he wanted was one more shot. He was one or two throws away from the big game last year, and he blew it. He knows it, the fans know it, Ted Thompson knows it. (Even though after all of this we can assure ourselves that Thompson doesn't know a whole lot.) Why would you do that to a man that has been the Green Bay Packers since at least 1995?

They did it to him in High School when they wouldn't let him throw. They did it to him in Atlanta when he wasn't going to be played by Jerry Glanville, and they did this to him when he wanted to come back to the place he loved in Green Bay. The Packers' front office proved how much they all wanted to move on, but also proved how slowly they want to achieve their rings. Favre was coming off a fantastic year. To trade him is to tell the fans that you don't want a Super Bowl yet. To tell Brett Favre, you know the "Number 4," that he can't play is like telling a dog he can't go outside and run around. It's not gonna happen, all he's going to do is stain your carpet. That's exactly what Brett Favre did to the Packers. They deserved it. They mistreated the poor man until he decided he wanted out. Even then they wouldn't give him that dignity.

The New York Jets got the BEST deal in NFL history. It's not like Favre is washed up. He can still play. I think that's where Ted Thompson screwed up. He wanted to get younger guys in, which is logical. But if you have a HOF QB lining up under center, who was one game away from greatness in the previous year, and you TRADE HIM, you're not going to win more than you did. Favre is a proven leader. He can still win. Rodgers is a kid who gets hurt at practice. The Pack are going to miss their iron-man, that's for sure.
