Crossing The (Goal) Line College Edition: September 12, 2010
Week 2 of college football is in the books and it had some great story lines and tremendous performances. Let’s recap how the Macho Rhino Top 25 did this weekend:
On my picks for week 2. I went 19-4, bringing my season total to 43-7 (86%). Who’d have though VA Tech would lose to James Madison? Just stunning and that James Madison would beat them by more than Boise State did! “Monster Saturday” didn’t provide much in the really big games. The ACC just looked terrible. Miami hung with Ohio State but looked awful in doing so while Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Florida State weren’t even respectable.
1. Boise State Idle
2. Alabama beat 21. Penn State 24-3 – The Tide’s defense is still stifling. Taking a freshman QB to Tuscaloosa didn’t work out too well for the Nittany Lions.
3. Ohio State beat 4. Miami 36-24– Jacory Harris was totally out of sync and the Canes turned it over far too much.
5. Virginia Tech lost to James Madison 21-16 – One week ago the Hokies had national title hopes. Now they’re 0-2 with a loss to a FCS team.
6. Texas beat Wyoming 34-7 – Wyoming led 7-6 and that woke Texas up so they ran away with this game.
7. Iowa beat Iowa State 35-7 – At least the Cyclones got a TD for the first time in years against the Hawkeyes.
8. TCU beat Tennessee Tech 62-7 – Dominant performance by the Horned Frogs.
9. Florida beat South Florida 38-14 – The Gators went down early but came back to win fairly easily.
10. Oregon won at Tennessee 48-13 – Tennessee got out to a lead but the Ducks absolutely blew them out in the second half. The Ducks’ offense looks like it’s one of the nation’s best again.
11. Wisconsin beat San Jose State 27-14 – I was expecting a wider margin of victory for the Badgers. Do they lack the killer instinct?
12. Nebraska beat Idaho 38-17 – Taylor Martinez is looking good for the Huskers.
13. Auburn won at Mississippi State 17-14 – Cam Newton led his team to a tough win on the road in SEC play.
14. Oklahoma beat 15. Florida State 47-17 – The Sooners answered questions about their secondary as they shut the Noles down. Landry Jones went 30 of 40 and looked great. Impressive OU.
16. Arkansas beat UL-Monroe 31-7 – Ryan Mallet had his offense cruising again. Next week he gets a test.
17. Utah beat UNLV 38-10 – Utah is looking good this season
18. Oregon State Idle
19. LSU won at Vanderbilt 27-3 – Les Miles is breathing a little easier after a 2-0 start but SEC play will ratchet up soon.
20. West Virginia won at Marshall 24-21 (OT) – A big comeback by the Mountaineers to save face for the Big East.
22. Georgia Tech lost at Kansas 28-25 – A terrible loss for Paul Johnson’s team.
23. Pittsburgh beat New Hampshire 38-16 – Pitt rolled over a FCS team.
24. Michigan won at Notre Dame 28-24 – A great game that saw the best player on the field, Denard Robinson, make the plays to get his team another win.
25. BYU lost at Air Force 35-14
– Air Force’s option attack looked great and they’ve still got a great pass defense.
Tune back in Thursday to www.MachoRhino.com for our picks on week 3 of the college football season.
GAME OF THE WEEK: Michigan 28, Notre Dame 24 – This was a back and forth game with Denard Robinson ultimately proving to be too much. Both teams hit big plays on offense and Notre Dame had a shot to win at the end of the game but threw it out the back of the end zone.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Kansas Jayhawks – To go from losing 6-3 to a FCS to beating a ranked team in Georgia Tech was huge for Turner Gill’s squad.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Denard Robision (QB – Michigan) – He surpassed his week 1 performance with over 500 yards of offense.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nick Fairley (DT – Auburn) – Here’s his stat line: 2.5 tackles for loss including 1.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, an interception and fumble recovery. He was dominant.
Top 5 Games Coming Up This Weekend:
Texas at Texas Tech – Tommy Tuberville gets his first taste of the Big 12 as his Red Raiders host the Longhorns.
Arkansas at Georgia – This one could turn in to a shootout.
Air Force at Oklahoma – The option vs. the spread.
Iowa at Arizona – A big test for the Hawkeyes as they go on the road and play Nick Foles, one of the most underrated QB’s in the country.
Nebraska at Washington – Freshman QB Taylor Martinez goes on the road in a very hostile environment. This is a tough game for the Huskers.
