Grant Gone? Kolb A Bust? No Worries, All The Right Waiver Pick-Ups Right Here

Bill ShermanSep 15, 2010

Every Tuesday morning we post our 1st Look waivers.  Our goal is to provide you with a list of fantasy relevant players who could be available on your leagues waiver wire.

Brandon Jackson headlines this weeks list. Jackson was originally pegged to be a temporary fill in while Grant recovered from his ankle sprain. The problem is Grant is now out for the season and Jackson offers huge early waiver wire value.

Which leads me to the rant of the week.  I hate leagues the reward owners week in and week out for drafting an awful team. Leagues that base their waivers on record drive me nuts. You are rewarding owners for drafting a bad team. I know some owners lose games due to injury, but when you draft an absolute all-bust squad, it just isn’t fair to completely rebuild your team with the best of the waiver wire. I have seen owners crap the draft and become relevant later in the season. Not relevant in the league standings but relevant in games towards the end of the season. See what last place Larry does over the season is slowly rebuild his team. While you are stuck in the middle tier. You know your team is missing just one small piece to make it a top team. But you and your team never get to take the next step because the idiot who was drafted 5th was so bombed by the second round that he drafted Ben Tate and Montario Hardesty in the 4th and 5th rounds. The clown just keeps getting all of the waiver wire darlings each week, while your team can’t even get a sniff of a top prospect.

Remember it is only week 1, everyone has a bad game, and the season is filled with ups and downs. Stick with the Brotherhood as we get you and your team where they need to be.

Brandon Jackson – GRE – RB
Ryan Grant is out for the season. If you own Grant and didn’t draft Jackson as his handcuff you should go out and pick him up as soon as possible. With Grant out, Jackson will see the bulk of the carries along with John Kuhn. Out of the two backs Jackson is the one to go out and get immediately. Jackson has the intangibles to be a productive back out of the Packer’s backfield.

Austin Collie – IND – WR
Collie had a very good game Sunday largely in part to his 73 yard touchdown reception. The Colts fell behind early and Peyton was forced to throw 57 times. Collies 11 targets are a direct result of that. I wouldn’t expect this to be a weekly occurrence but it’s clear he has earned Peyton’s trust. The fact is, he’s the third receiver on a very good offense. Consider Collie a must add and decent WR3/Flex option.

Steve Breaston – ARI – WR
Breaston went undrafted in a lot of leagues. It was only week 1 and they did play the Rams, but Breaston appears to have a developed a good rapport with Derick Anderson. He was targeted 7 times and had 7 catches for 132 yards. Breaston should be considered a legitimate WR3 option in 12 team leagues.

Legedu Naanee – SD – WR

Legedu Naanee is a former quarterback turned wide receiver while at Boise St. He runs clean and crisp routes and displays a nice set of hands for a guy that hasn’t been playing the position that long.Naanee was the most productive receiver in last nights game.  He is unowned in a majority of leagues and has the ability to post solid weekly numbers as a WR3.  With Vincent Jackson out, Naanee will be force fed targets.  He should be owned in most formats.

Kyle Orton – DEN – QB
I had Orton as one of my sleepers this year. Last season he quietly threw for over 3,800 yards and he appears to be on pace to do it again. Orton threw for 295 yards and a score against the Jaguars Sunday. He’s a safe and consistent quarterback option on a good offense. You could do worse for your QB2 or bye week fill in.

Mike Williams – TAM – WR
Williams displayed his game breaking ability throughout the pre-season but still went undrafted in most leagues. He was targeted a team high 9 times on Sunday but only managed 5 receptions for 30 yards. He made one of the better catches of the day on his three yard touchdown catch. When he and Josh Freeman become more comfortable with each other Williams has a good chance to post solid weekly numbers. He should be considered a WR3 with upside.

Michael Vick – PHI – QB
Vick came into the game after starer Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion. Vick made the most of his opportunity and posted very good overall numbers. He went 16-24 for 175 yards and 1 TD pass. He also added 103 yards rushing on 11 carries. He displayed the play making ability that made him a three time pro-bowler with Atlanta. Kolb needs to pass his tests in order to be cleared for Sundays game. If you drafted Kolb and don’t have an adequate back up you should consider Vick an option. We don’t know if a quarterback controversy is immanent, but the situation should be monitored closely.

Mark Clayton - RAMS – WR
Clayton had a very good debut for the Rams. He was targeted a game high 16 times and managed 10 receptions for 119 yards. Before we get to excited, we should remember that Clayton has gotten off to hot starts in the past only to disappear quickly. He should be monitored in all leagues, but I wouldn’t add him just yet unless your desperate for receiver help.

Peyton Hillis – CLE – RB

Hillis got the start and carried 9 times for 41 yards with 1 TD.  He also added 4 receptions for 24 yards.  It’s looks like the Browns are going to use more of a committee approach  them we thought.  If week 1 was an indicator of whats to come then Hillis and Jerome Harrison should see an even split.  Hillis should be added in most formats.

Mike Thomas – JAC – WR

Thomas is another Fantasy Football Brothers sleeper who could put together a solid season.  He looked good throughout the pre-season and it carried over into week 1.  He should be monitored in larger leagues as a potential WR3/4.

Chris Chambers – KAN – WR
Chambers is the #2 wide out on an up and coming offense. He should see plenty of single coverage throughout the year making him a solid WR4 candidate in larger leagues.

Nate Washington – TEN – WR
Washington is the Titans #1 wide out. He displayed his big play ability on Sunday when he hauled in a 56 yard touchdown pass from Vince Young. He was only targeted 4 times but managed 3 receptions for 88 yards. Keep him on your radar in deeper leagues.

Jermaine Gresham – CIN – TE
Gresham displayed the speed and pass catching ability that made him a 1st round pick in Aprils draft. Palmer targeted him 10 times but he only managed 25 yards on 6 catches with a 1 yard TD. The tight end position is deep this year, but Gresham could become a top 12 option.

Mike Williams – SEA – WR
Williams is a guy we’re rooting for. He did a very nice job against a good 49ers defense and should be monitored in deeper leagues.

LaRod Stephens-Howling – ARI – RB
With Wells out of the line up Fantasy Football Brothers Super Sleeper LaRod Stephens-Howlings got an opportunity to display his ability. He’s a shifty runner with blazing speed who also displays good hands. If Wells is out long he could see an increased role. Keep him om on your radar.

David Garrard – JAC – QB
Garrard has always been a solid quarterback. One of the biggest knocks on him is that he’s not the most efficient redzone passer. He got off to a good start Sunday with his 3 TD performance. The scoring passes came from 24, 21 and 10 yards. He should be consider a low risk QB2.

Derek Anderson – ARI – QB
Anderson has the chance to post solid numbers in the Cardinals offense. As soon as he get’s on the same page as Fitzgerald he could become a sneaky QB2 play.

Matt Hasselbeck – SEA – QB
Hasselbeck performed well above my expectations Sunday. If he can stay healthy, he should be a decent QB2 option.

Fred Taylor – NE – RB

Taylor was impressive on Sunday gaining 74 yards on 14 carries against a good Bengals defense.  With Lawrence Maroney being shipped off to Denver for a 4th round draft pick, Taylor could see a majority of the carries.  If he does become the featured back consider him a borderline RB2/flex play.  The problem is that the Patriots are famous for using a committee approach.  Sammie Morris, Kevin Faulk and “The Law Firm”  BenJarvus Green-Ellis will also be in the mix.  The situation should be monitored closely.  Consider Taylor a must add in deeper leagues.
