NFL Prime Picks: A Weekly Series Devoted To Beating the Point Spreads, Week 2

Thomas MorelandSep 15, 2010

Last week we found ourselves down 7-9 for the week against the line with the first week showing more underdog winners than expected.

That coupled with choosing two more wrong underdogs will get you that kind of week. But fear not., it's very early in the betting season, and one to two weeks of that always happens.

It was only one game off being even, except for the juice, and this week will even out quite nicely I'm sure.

The first game we will deal with will be Philadelphia and Michael Vick, taking on Detroit without Stafford, possibly. Philadelphia will cover on the road and is an eliminator pick of mine this week. Take Philadelphia to win by four-and-a-half to five points.

The Vikings play host to Miami and the running attack of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams plus the added Brandon Marshall. The Vikings win this game at home by a touchdown or more. They have this Peterson guy, and Brett Favre.

Denver plays host to Seattle and hopes to avoid an 0-2 start. Seattle smoked San Francisco last week like a can of salmon, and will also beat Denver to go 2-0 to take an early division lead in the West. You get three-and-a-half points. How wonderful this is.

Atlanta will be at home after losing to the Steelers last week. Atlanta will beat Arizona badly and send them scurrying back to the desert. Atlanta by six-and-a-half easy. I would lock this pick up and grab some free dough.

The Ravens struggled offensively against the Jets, who do have a good defense, while the Bengals did show some offense last week. Take the Bengals in a close game to win by three or four points.

Kansas City looked very good in a win against San Diego last week, but beware of the road. Cleveland lost to an improving Tampa Bay team, but will improve also. Cleveland wins a close one here, two points should be safe.

Dallas should right the ship quickly against the Bears who don't play well in Texas. Eight-and-a-half points seems like too many, but it isn't. Look for four touchdowns by the Cowboys.

The Packers are the second lock this week as they will decimate the Bills by 20 points. This will also be a pick in an elimination league this week.

The Steelers are five-and-a-half point underdogs to Tennessee this week on the road. This is way too many points as this game has field goal win written all over it. Take Pittsburgh.

Tampa Bay will not be so lucky this week, and will lose to Carolina by seven points or more.

The Raiders will even out the season at 1-1 beating Stephen Jackson and the Rams by six points or more.

I picked the Jets to beat New England in this game earlier in preseason, and although it looks like a dumb pick, I will stick to the Jets getting one-and-a-half points at home.

The Chargers are favored by seven-and-a-half at home against Jacksonville and that seems a bit high as well. I like the upset here so seven-and-a-half points is a huge bonus.

Houston came out strong to start the season, which was refreshing from an organization who has struggled to start well time after time. Take Houston to overwhelm the Washington defense this week and make it back to Texas 2-0. You are giving three points with the Texans.

Peyton Manning must beat his brother and the Giants this week to get to 1-1 and be back one game in the division already. The Giants get five-and-a-half points and this may be too many. Let's take a mild upset here and take the points and New York to keep it close.

The Saints travel to San Francisco and a very angry Mike Singletary. This will not help San Francisco as they fall to 0-2, and have self doubt start creeping into their early season brains.

Have a fantastic week.
