Cleveland Browns Loss Will Question Mike Holmgren's Evaluation of Jake Delhomme

Daniel WolfSep 12, 2010

Cleveland Browns' President Mike Holmgren is well-known for his great resume of Hall of Fame quarterbacks, but that was as a coach.

Now he is a front office executive and not coaching quarterbacks on the playing field.

His ability to evaluate talent at quarterback has been well documented, but his latest project of rejuvenating Jake Delhomme's career may have taken a turn for the worse against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In a loss where the Browns were supposed to win against a Bucs team that was also rebuilding, Delhomme reverted back to his old turnover-prone self and threw two interceptions.

The first one was the killer though when he threw an ill-advised sidearm pass that was very Bernie Kosar-like right to Bucs cornerback Ronde' Barber who returned it to the three-yard line.

The next time Delhomme was in the game, you could see he was shocked by the near pick-six, and he was never able to recover from that turnover.

It deflated both Delhomme and the team.

During preseason, Delhomme shut up all of his critics by having an outstanding 110 quarterback rating, but that was just preseason.

When it counted, Delhomme failed to impress and recover from that bad throw.

This not only fuels the fire of the doubters of Delhomme's abilities, but this also makes you question Holmgren's choice when he could have had a chance to acquire Donovan McNabb or Jason Campbell instead.

This is not a "What If?" article though, but this play has already gotten many Browns fans in online forums talking about benching him and starting Seneca Wallace.

Heck, a few fans have even said to just throw Colt McCoy in as starter and get him learning the game as fast as possible.

And others say fire Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll for his reverting back to his 2009 conservative play-calling playbook.

What ever the case is, if the Browns cannot win their home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs next week, then look for MAJOR changes to be made sooner than later.

The season just started and as much that Holmgren thought he would prevent a quarterback controversy, by signing a turnover-prone quarterback in Delhomme, Holmgren may have just started a new one in Cleveland this season.

Why is the backup always the favorite in Cleveland?

Because the starters cannot play solid football.

The trend continues after week one.
