Vernon Davis's New Contract: San Francisco Has Best TE Group in NFL

Brian WinettSep 11, 2010

Vernon Davis is coming off of a career year and has just signed the contract extension to prove it.

On the eve of the 2010 regular season, the 49ers made Davis the highest paid tight end in league history with a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed.

This deal, in conjunction with Patrick Willis's five-year, $50 million extension last May means the 49ers have locked up their two MVP's on each side of the ball for years to come.

Not only that, this means the 49ers have the best TE group in the NFL locked up through at least the end of the 2013 season.

The pair of tight ends who have filled Davis' shoes in the preseason has been one of the highlights.

Delanie Walker has looked fleet of foot while bowling his way downfield and can probably start for half the teams in the NFL right now.

Add to him a blocking tight end in Nate Byham, who has surprised everyone with his pass-catching and route-running ability, and you have a pair of tight ends that can perform admirably during a regular season.

Add to that pair a freakish athlete like Vernon Davis who outruns safeties deep down the middle of the field, and you have the best tight end group in football.

At the beginning of this off-season, there were many who had questions about the direction of this franchise.  Whoever is running this ship has all sails running in the right direction.

Now let's just hope there really is no beef between Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis, because they're stuck with each other for the next bunch of years.
