Cowboys Vs. Redskins: What If Donovan McNabb Lead The Redskins To Victory

Jamie FluddSep 11, 2010

What “IF” a McNabb led Redskins team defeats the Dallas Cowboys?

The first game of the season for the Washington Redskins will be against the NFC East Champs, the Dallas Cowboys.  This will be the third straight game against the Dallas Cowboys for Washington Redskins quarterback, Donovan McNabb.  In the regular season game and the Wild Card game, McNabb did not do too well.  Let’s look at the numbers:

Week 17 vs. Dallas CowboysWild Card Game Vs. Dallas Cowboys

Yards                     223Yards                        230

According to these numbers, not only Donovan McNabb had a bad game, but the offensive line did a bad job protecting the QB.  A good Offensive line makes a Good QB great, mediocre running back good and speedy receivers to game changers.

A victory over the Cowboys would open up the question in the NFL world; how could a McNabb led Redskins team defeat the NFC EAST champs, but the McNabb led Eagles team struggled terribly against them?

The McNabb led Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Dallas Cowboys because the Dallas Cowboys are familiar with the Philadelphia Eagles.  The Dallas Cowboys know that the Philadelphia Eagles will use the short pass to set up the long pass.  Andy Reid’s brand of football has been in the NFC East since 1999, and has not changed.  Being dominated in one division is a great thing, but it also can be a bad thing, especially if you are not changing with time.

The Washington Redskins do not have the “young guns” or “weapons” like the Philadelphia Eagles.  To many, the Washington Redskins' roster is made up old, washed up players who would have been in the Pro-bowl in 2006.  In this game, Mike Shanahan will have to do a better job than Andy Reid.  Shanahan must make adjustments and have a balanced attack against the Cowboys.  Most importantly, PROTECT YOUR QUARTERBACK.  The Dallas Cowboys loves pass happy teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Orleans Saints because they play to their advantage.

In the game of football, it is not only about talent.  It is also about coaching and preparation.  Without the proper coaching and preparation, then any great team can lose on any given Sunday.  Kobe and Shaq could not win a championship with Del Harris, but when Phil Jackson came, the Lakers were able to win champions.  It was not that Del Harris was a bad basketball coach; it was the fact that he did not know how to play the hand that he was dealt.
