College Football Predictions For Week Two By On The Top 25 and More
Last week I went 31-5 (86.1%) [Season (86.1%], not good enough to crow too much but probably not the worst average.
I was completely wrong in both the games of BCS busters and so TCU and Boise continue to march forward and I have to hear those debates continue. I would like to say that it was not only me wishing that they would lose that I picked them both to lose but alas I really did think that if VA Tech and Oregon State had their acts together that the BCS buster talk might be over for a while. Who knew that establishment teams would forget to do what was thought to be their strengths. Va Tech built on a reputation of strong special team play and a stout defense that played disciplined ball spotted Boise State 17 points on boneheaded ST play and at several turns helped Boise with penalties and poor defensive execution. Oregon State not long known as a player on the football scene found weapons in the Rodgers brothers last year but where were they in week one.
Two other upsets that I thought were possible went opposite as I predicted. I thought Purdue might pull the upset as they seemed to be ready to have a break out game and I thought Pittsburgh might avoid the upset because this was according to many was going to be the year of the Panthers; well strike three and four because of those two. My last crash and burn was in trusting Cincinnati to continue its winning ways of the last few years. I guess five wrong is not terrible but it’s the misses you remember most and that your friends remind you of often.
Weekly Highlights:
Four contests between ranked teams and UM/ND are the marquee matches of the week. This type of week a football fan's dream poll shake ups and games that make a team bring their best before rivalry weeks. Two upsets are possible as I see itbut rankings one and two seem safe as it seems likely that OSU and Alabama will hold off their lower ranked opponents.
No. 22 Georgia at No. 24 South Carolina
No. 17 Florida State at No. 10 Oklahoma
No. 12 Miami (FL) at No. 2 Ohio State
No. 18 Penn State at No. 1 Alabama
Michigan at Notre Dame
Potential Routs:
Houston will be trying to prove itself so UTEP will be the victim of an air attack that will raise the potential for a rout. TCU will pound their FCS opponent trying to pad their BCS buster credentials and well Va Tech will just be pissed after not sowing up in last Monday’s game with Boise State. Many after the New Mexico game might want to place Tennessee in the rout victim section this week but I believe the Volunteers will show up Saturday against Oregon if for nothing else than pride.
UTEP at Houston
James Madison at No. 13 Virginia Tech
Tennessee Tech at No. 4 TCU
Potential Upsets:
No. 22 Georgia at No. 24 South Carolina
No. 17 Florida State at No. 10 Oklahoma
Thursday, September 9
Central Michigan at Temple
- I think there is more returning experience in the right places that will give Temple the advantage.
No. 21 Auburn at Mississippi State
- It may not be pretty and it may not be easy but I believe Auburn beats Mississippi Sate.
Friday, September 10
No. 23 West Virginia at Marshall
- WVU wins this in state battle
UTEP at Houston
- Houston beats UTEP like a drum.
Saturday, September 11
San Jose State at No. 11 Wisconsin
- SJ State gets beat for a pay check a second week.
No. 15 Georgia Tech at Kansas
- Kansas could not field a winning team against a much lesser opponent like week. The yellow Jackets will win this one .
No. 22 Georgia at No. 24 South Carolina
- Neither team seems to be on a course for the SEC title but I think the Gamecocks are more hungry and will pull out a minor upset victory,
Illinois State at Northwestern
- The wildcats will win this one with ease
South Dakota at Minnesota
- Minnesota will win this but it will not be pretty
Michigan State vs. Florida Atlantic
- MSU wins, it will be interesting to see if they can get their passing game going this week.
Western Illinois at Purdue
- Purdue wins
South Florida at No. 8 Florida
- South Florida is not a Cinderella team this year and Florida is not happy with last week performance. The Gators win.
Idaho at No. 6 Nebraska
- Idaho will be beat bad
James Madison at No. 13 Virginia Tech
- VA Tech returns to Blacksburg angry and James Madison pays for it.
Iowa State at No. 9 Iowa
- An instate rivalry which has Iowa State having the added fuel of A. Clayborn’s bulletin board material but Iowa still wins.
No. 17 Florida State at No. 10 Oklahoma
- The way Utah State moved the ball against the Sooners it would seem a logical pick to go with the upset but I believe that Oklahoma will give more respect to the Seminoles and salvage the home winning streak.
Michigan at Notre Dame
- Either team can win this game and it is probably one of these teams game to lose. I however give a slight edge to Michigan since I believe overall team speed will favor the Wolverines.
Kent State at Boston College
- The Eagles win easily.
Georgia Southern at Navy
- Navy will execute better this week and come away with the win.
No. 12 Miami (FL) at No. 2 Ohio State
- At the Shoe I believe the Buckeyes win this game if their secondary can cover long enough to allow the rush to unsettle Miami’s QB.
UNLV at No. 20 Utah
- Utah is not going to lose at home this week.
Morgan State at Maryland
- Maryland moves to 2-0
No. 18 Penn State at No. 1 Alabama
- Penn State has a winner in their new QB it just won’t be this week as much as I might want it to be otherwise.
Tennessee Tech at No. 4 TCU
- TCU continue its BCS buster campaign pounding Tennessee Tech.
Wyoming at No. 5 Texas
- Very bad week for Wyoming football does not get better
No. 7 Oregon at Tennessee
- Tennessee avoid the rout but still loses.
No. 14 Arkansas vs. Louisiana-Monroe
- Arkansas wins
No. 19 LSU at Vanderbilt
- LSU was shown not to be the cream of the SEC last week but they are still too much for Vanderbilt.
Southern Illinois at Illinois
Virginia at No. 16 USC
- Virginia won last week, that will not be happening this week
No. 25 Stanford at UCLA
- Stanford should win this one.
