Open Mic- All time New York Yankees team

Eric LarsonAug 8, 2008

Since this is the last year of Yankee stadium, I thought it would be a good time to select the all time Yankees team. I am going to list a 25 man team, with 2 players at each position (starter and backup), and 9 pitchers (5 starters, 4 relievers). My requirements are that the player must have played at least 5 full seasons with the Yankees to make this team. The outfield is based on the actual position of the player. For example, Joe Dimaggio and Mickey Mantle are both center-fielders, so, I am not moving one of them to left field.

First Base:

Starter- Lou Gehrig- Hall of Fame

Backup- Don Mattingly

Second Base:

Starter-Tony Lazzeri- Hall of Fame

Backup- Bobby Richardson

Shortstop:

Starter-Phil Rizzuto- Hall of Fame

Backup-Derek Jeter- a very close second, but I'll give the start to the Rizzuto with his 7 championships to Jeter's 4.

Third Base:

Starter- Graig Nettles

Backup- Clete Boyer

Note- Alex Rodriguez has only played 3 years with the Yankees.

Right Field:

Starter- Babe Ruth- Hall of Fame

Backup- Reggie Jackson- Hall of Fame- Reggie just makes the team by playing 5 full seasons with the Yankees

Center-field:

Starter- Joe Dimaggio- Hall of Fame

Backup- Mickey Mantle- Hall of Fame- Imagine having Mantle as your backup center-fielder!

Left Field:

Starter- Dave Winfield- Hall of Fame-Played much of his time in Left Field with the Yankees.

Backup- Roy White-

Catcher:

Starter- Yogi Berra- Hall of Fame

Backup- Bill Dickey- Hall of Fame

Starting Pitchers:

1. Whitey Ford- Hall of Fame

2. Lefty Gomez- Hall of Fame

3. Ron Guidry

4. Allie Reynolds

5. Andy Pettite

Relief Pitchers:

1. Rich "Goose"  Gossage- Newly inducted into the Hall of Fame

2. Mariano Rivera

3. Sparky Lyle

4. Joe Page

This team would be impossible to beat. It includes 13 Hall of Famers out of the 25 players. Surprisingly, the Yankees never had a great left fielder on any of their championship teams. No one Hall of Famer has started on the championship teams in left field.. Even in the most recent dynasty of the 90s, the Yankees won with players such as Chad Curtis, or an aging Daryl Strawberry playing left field.

It's amazing to see how many great players have been left off this team.

Thurman Munson, Paul ONeil, David Cone, Mickey Rivers, and Elston Howard are some of the names left off this team. I imagine the 3rd team would be an all time team as well.

Let the arguments begin!
