Boise State Football: I Believe in the Broncos
Let me reiterate the above statement...
I BELIEVE IN BOISE STATE.
Over the past two seasons we have all read and watched all the talking heads and so-called "experts" of the college gridiron give us reason upon reason why Boise State doesn't deserve a shot at the BCS National Title game.
And I'm sure you've heard the reasons why.
First of all, they're in the WAC. Second, they're in the WAC. Third, you guessed it.
They're in the WAC.
I've heard broken records that sounded less irritating. Yes, they are in the Western Athletic Conference; a conference that they have completely dominated since 2002. As a matter of fact Boise State has only lost one conference game since joining the WAC.
That's one conference loss in seven years. Not to mention a combined record of 84-8 and two BCS Bowl victories in that span. One coming at the expense of a highly favored Oklahoma squad in what could be considered one of the best games if not "The" best game of the decade.
And then last year's victory over #3 TCU in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Now I will admit, if I was asked two years ago if Boise State deserved a shot at the National Championship I would've said no. End of story.
But now, after all that BSU has accomplished, the story has changed and all fingers are pointing to the land of potatoes and blue football fields. If the 2010 Boise State Broncos run the table and finish the regular season undefeated, they deserve a shot at the National Championship.
If they don't then I don't know who does. Besides slaying the dragon, spending 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness alone with satan, and going on a Heraclean voyage this team has done everything a team can do to earn a spot on the largest stage in collegiate football.
In 2003 Oklahoma manged to slip into the BCS Title game after losing the Big 12 conference championship to Kansas State. In 2007 LSU went all the way from #7 to number #2 after winning the SEC Championship game. And at the same time became the first 2 loss team to compete for a National Championship.
So as you can see bigger tragedies have befallen the BCS Title game.
And more importantly Boise State has handled all the insults with nothing but pure grace and class. The Boise faithful have seemed to adopt the calm, cool, collective demeanor of their head coach Chris Peterson.
After all the bowl games were over and done with last year and The Crimson Tide were crowned BCS National Champions for the 2009 football season. Chris Peterson was asked in an interview if he thought his Boise State Broncos deserved a share of that title. Peterson simply replied "No, Alabama was the winners of the BCS Championship game. We're just really happy that we were able to make it into a BCS bowl game and win."
A classy answer from a world class football coach.
Boise State has remained patient over the years. They have taken insult after insult about their strength of schedule and how there is no place for them in the Big Game and they have taken it without much complaint.
They have faced every single challenge that has came before them and continue to do so as they did in last night's game against #10 Virginia Tech. The proverbial underdog, the team that everyone loves to hate, the team with the blue turf. The Boise State Broncos.
So, if I'm asked now do I think the Boise State Broncos are for real. Do I think Boise State deserves a shot at college football's ultimate prize. Yes, I do.
I believe Boise State has earned the respect of their critics. I believe Boise State is one of THE BEST football teams in all the land. I believe if Boise State remains undefeated and untied during the 2010 season that there is NO WAY they can go unnoticed by the BCS any longer.
I Believe in Boise State.
