The UEFA Champions League: Liverpool F.C.'s 2007/2008 Campaign
After a shaky start to their Champions League schedule, Liverpool F.C. still find themselves in contention to go through to the first knockout stage.
After drawing against FC Porto and losing to Marseille at Anfield, the Reds put up a lousy effort but came through with their first win.
After that, Liverpool hasn't looked back winning the next games 8-0 and 4-1.

After Liverpool`s 4-1 win over FC Porto, manager Rafael Benitez had this to say, ”I would like to say thank you to our supporters because as always they were magnificent. Porto played well for a lot of the game, controlling the middle, so we needed to change our forward players. We needed people to keep hold of the ball as they were pressing us. We had to win this game as everyone likes to go through in the Champions League. Marseille will be a tough game, the atmosphere will be for them and they played very well here. But we deserve to be in the position we are now, rather than the one we were in six weeks ago.”
Their recent success is due to Rafael Benitez's decision to give playing time to whoever is at their best and not to stick with his first plan, which was to rotate the strikers.
Their next match against Marseille will decide whether or not Liverpool will be moving through to the next round; however it's quite likely they will. The qualifying odds favour the French club because a draw, coupled with a Porto win, would send Marseille through on account of their victory at Anfield on 3 October.
Yet should Besiktas triumph, then a draw would be enough for Liverpool.
In that instance the Turkish side would finish as winners of the section while Porto, Liverpool and Marseille would all have eight points, with the Reds progressing by virtue of their superior record against the other two teams.
On Match Day 6 Liverpool will need to come out with a win if they wish to celebrate a place in the UEFA Champions League last 16 and more games in the New Year.
