High School Football: Dwyer Robbed of Game By Poor Officiating

Kraig LundbergSep 6, 2010

I don't know if I have ever seen a more poorly officiated football game in my life.

In a game of nationally ranked powers, Dwyer High School (FL) is cheated out of a win against Glenville (OH), 26-22.  In the waning moments of a hard-fought game full of mistakes and jawing between teams, Dwyer was on the move down the field.  After successfully converting two fourth down attempts, quarterback Jacoby Brissett threw a beautiful pass to a receiver in the corner of the endzone, who made an exceptional leaping grab.  Touchdown.

Right?

Nope.  Officials said he was out of bounds.  Replay clearly showed that the receiver was in-bounds, but high school does not use replay, so the call stood.  Okay, I could accept that.  A mistake that was a close call.  It didn't seem to bother Dwyer, as Brissett drove the team to another 4th down conversion.  Brissett then carried the ball to the one yard line, where it was  first and goal with only seconds to play.  The first attempted quarterback  sneak was unsuccessful, but there was still time for one more try.  On the second sneak, Brissett and the offensive line powered their way into the endzone. 3 quarters of the pile was in the endzone as well, and if you watched Brissett, he was clearly well over the goal line.  Touchdown Dwyer!  A great win, 28-26!

Right??

Shockingly, the officials called him down at about the one inch line, and without any Dwyer timeouts left, time expired.  Final score: Glenville 26, Dwyer 22, with an asterisk.  The Glenville players burst into celebration.  Whether they were celebrating a hard-fought win or celebrating getting away with a cheap victory is debatable.  Probably both.  And whether the officials were favoring Glenville or they were just that stupid is also debatable.  Either way, this game was a classic example of crappy officiating.  Kudos to Dwyer, the real winning team in this one.
