NFL Trades And Waivers: Vincent Jackson Deal Reportedly Falls Apart and More
It was a chaotic weekend in the NFL, as trades appeared and disappeared from the radar, major moves were made, and others were quashed.
When the dust settled, there were all kinds of players who wound up on the waiver wire, or who hadn't been traded yet. Many of those guys will find homes in the coming days, on new teams and with new roles.
Here's a list of players whose names have been floating on the radar recently and could be moved for the 2010 season.
10. Patrick Ramsey, Quarterback
1 of 10
Patrick Ramsey has been a backup pretty much his entire career. The Tulane grad found himself on the Saints roster through training camp, but was one of the last players cut as New Orleans attempted to get down to just 53 men on roster.
But don't weep for Ramsey yet. Teams like the Buccaneers and Seahawks could use a veteran backup quarterback, and Ramsey fits the bill perfectly. He's got a decent arm and accuracy, but throws too many interceptions.
9. Al Afalava, Safety
2 of 10
Al Afalava was a decent, if undersized safety for the Bears last season. He was released when the final roster cuts were made, but the second-year player out of Oregon State has plenty of value for teams who need depth at safety. No offers have been made yet, but Al's sure to end up somewhere, like Detroit, Dallas or Cincinnati, where the safety corps is thin.
8. Pat White Quarterback
3 of 10
White was cut by the Miami Dolphins this weekend, surprising absolutely no one. He had failed to impress in his time in Miami, and is now available on the open market.
White hasn't garnered much interest to this point, so a stint in the CFL is possible. But he's got value, and for a team who wants to change things up a bit, he could be a decent fit. Look for Buffalo, Seattle and Chicago to all be in the market for him at some point this year.
7. Jason Spitz, Center
4 of 10
Jason Spitz is the backup center in Green Bay, and many thought he could be cut when rosters were trimmed to 53. But Spitz persisted, and is now a candidate to be traded. The entire AFC West outside of San Diego needs a center, as do Philly and Houston. With as valuable as the position can be, the Packers could get real value out of their backup.
6. Tony Richardson, Fullback
5 of 10
Tony Richardson is a 15-year NFL veteran who was shockingly released by the Jets prior to the season. Although it's been speculated that the Jets will try to re-sign him, Richardson could also wind up in Arizona, where an injury to starter Nehemiah Broughton has left the Cardinals depleted at fullback.
Richardson's a veteran who is an excellent blocker and adequate receiver. If he leaves New York, he could have definite value.
5. Anthony Becht, Tight End
6 of 10
Becht is a 10-year veteran who was released by the Cardinals prior to the season. He's an excellent blocker with good hands, although he lacks the ability to separate from coverage.
Becht would be an excellent pickup for a team that needs a blocking tight end, or would be an adequate receiving backup tight end.
4. Justin Hartwig, Center
7 of 10
Hartwig was released by the Steelers with the promotion of rookie Maurkice Pouncey to starting center. But the eight-year veteran isn't washed up yet. He's big and strong, and works hard to maximize his abilities. For a team who needs a center, he's a more solid option than the aforementioned Jason Spitz.
3. Troy Smith, Quarterback
8 of 10
Smith's struggle for playing time has been well documented over the last few weeks, and now that he's been released by the Ravens, he can find a place (like Buffalo) where he could come in and be the best option immediately.
He's got a strong arm and good mobility, and has developed into quite the quarterback. A team could have quite a steal if they pick him up.
2. Greg Olsen, Tight End
9 of 10
Teams have been calling about Olsen for quite a while, but no one's really sure how serious the Bears are about trading the former Hurricane. He's big, rangy and has good hands, so he'd be a valuable commodity.
For a team like Buffalo, Arizona or Jacksonville, he'd be worth the price they're asking.
1. Vincent Jackson, Wide Receiver
10 of 10
This weekend, it looked as though Jackson was headed to Baltimore, but the Ravens went cheaper, plucking former star slot receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh off waivers.
There's still quite an active market for the 6'5" Jackson. Minnesota and Washington are considered frontrunners, as both suddenly have question marks at wideout.
If he leaves San Diego, expect more of the same caliber numbers he put up last season.
