Trojan Update: 1st Victory

Pardon My Bias Bleacher ReportSep 6, 2010

On Thursday, the Men of Troy started their season off with a 49-36 victory over the Hawaii Warriors. This game was highly anticipated with so many questions about how USC would look with brand new coaches and a bunch of new defensive starters. Overall it was a great way to start the season but many unanswered questions still remain.

USC Defense: I think one of the biggest holes was the USC Defense. This is a brand new defensive line and a bunch of first and second years and the ‘veterans’ are those that really did not have much playing time last year. The Trojans had a difficult time trying to cover Hawaii’s vertical game and this could pose as a big threat for upcoming games this season. This defense could face some big big problems against programs like Oregon and Washington who are pass heavy offenses. This is something very new for USC fans because the defense was one of the strong points under Pete Carroll. This year the defense is not very deep and also has a lot of brand new starters. An injury here and there could really put the Trojans in a lot of trouble.

Coaching Staff: So what was Lane Kiffin thinking trying to go for all those two point conversions? Was he trying to prove a point to everyone? The trojans were unsuccessful 3 out of the 4 times they tried and I wish that they could have just gone for the extra point instead. I am sure Lane was extremely excited with the way that the offense played, but he shouldn’t let his excitement get away from the task at hand..and that’s to win.

I am very excited for the Trojans season this year because I think every game will be a big game for them. Matt Barkley and Ronald Johnson had great chemistry and the offense was clicking all throughout the game. Let’s just hope that the defense can learn from their mistakes from this game and play better against Virgina next Saturday at the Coliseum! Great win and confidence booster for the program overall..let’s keep it going!

This is just an opinion…so please Pardon My Bias.
