NFL Rumors: New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan Meets With Darrelle Revis Sunday

Michael KelleySep 5, 2010

So I was watching Sportscenter and to my surprise, scrolling on the bottom line was "Rex Ryan meets with holdout Darrelle Revis over weekend. A deal is not imminent but contract talks are open" If Revis is actually caving Jets fans everywhere can breathe a very deep sigh of relief. If he takes the offer we've been trying to get him to sign, it should be reasonable money and not an out of this world pay raise like he's been asking for. Pay the man but don't overpay him.

"In an attempt to end the contract impasse with his star cornerback, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan flew to South Florida over the weekend and met with Darrelle Revis, league sources confirmed to ESPN.com Sunday night."

It's good to see that Rex is taking matters into his own hands. He doesn't want to see our championship run fail because Revis isn't suited up. If you've been keeping up with Hard Knocks, Rex made it very clear they the Jets will not be bullied by anyone, but this stubbornness can come and bite the Jets in the rear. I like his attitude and his stance but at the same time you don't want Revis seeing that and angering the man. If both sides are going to be stubborn mules the Jets Super Bowl chances drop and Revis will never get his contract and sit 4 straight years of his career becoming irrelevant. Neither side wants that so we'll see who budges first.

"Ryan and Revis have a good relationship, and the Jets were counting on Ryan's persuasiveness to change Revis' stance. But, according to sources, there hasn't been any significant progress in negotiations."

Whether the Jets are making progress or not it's always a good sign to see effort. If Revis has his mind set on that contract and will not agree to anything else this may last weeks into the season, or possibly more. Let's not forget this is the same guy that held out to get the contract he has now. Don't be surprised if he goes the extra mile and sits for the season. Who knows what those bonehead agents of his is telling him to do.

Update : Darrelle Revis agrees to terms.

We still don't have the exact numbers yet. However, Rich Cimini is reporting he will become the highest paid defensive player in NFL history, and Jay Glazer is reporting "It's a 7 year deal that voids easily to a 4 year deal"
