Nevada's Kaepernick In Lofty Territory After Win Over Eastern Washington

Michael PatmasSep 5, 2010

Nevada's senior QB Colin Kaepernick led the Wolf Pack to a win over Eastern Washington last week and in so doing climbed further into the statistical stratosphere. Kaepernick has now accumulated a staggering 10,348 yards, nearly 3,000 of them rushing! He has surpassed Tim Tebow's 2,947 yards with twelve games left to play. At his average pace, he will rush for over 4,000 yards in his career. He is now responsible for 105 TD's; 63 passing, 41 rushing and 1 receiving. He needs to average 3.5 TD's per game over the remainder of the season to surpass Tebow's 145 career TD's. Kaepernick could conceivably end his college career with somewhere in the vicinity of 14,000 total yards and over 150 TD's. Whether you like the Nevada Wolf Pack or not, you have to admit, these are some pretty impressive stats. Don't let the WAC's status as a doormat dissuade you, many of these scores came against the likes of Boise State, Texas Tech, Fresno State and Missouri. Consider this, Kaepernick led the Wolf Pack to 135 points against #3 BSU in the just the last three games. Who else can claim that?

His performance against EWU was impressive going 26 / 37 for 307 yards with two TD's in the air and two more on the ground. In a clear departure from last season when "Colin on the keeper" was all you heard, he was a pitching machine last week. His accuracy seemed much improved. Some of the dropped passes were right on the money. They were just 90 mph fastballs the receivers could not handle. If he had guys who catch his rocket propelled grenades, he would do even better.

But there was much to be concerned about in Nevada's 49-24 win over EWU in a tune up. The defense though clearly better than the sieve it was last season, still gave up some big plays. Missed tackles and a lack of team speed on defense were very evident. If Nevada hopes to improve upon their 8-5 record, they simply must improve on defense. Tackling would be a good thing to practice this week, OK Mr. Buh?

With Colorado State up next, Cal the following weekend and BYU soon thereafter, there is precious little time to get ready. The hard truth is, Kaepernick and company will deliver plenty of offense. Its up to the defense to deliver the victory.
