2010 Chicago Bears Season: Top 2009 Picks Gilbert and Iglesias Cut

Nicholas FischSep 4, 2010

After spending $100M on the first day of free agency, the Bears showed to the NFL that it was win or else. Another sign of the mandate from Bears CEO Ted Phillips, the top two draft picks from 2009 were cut. At 5:00 p.m. today, all NFL teams had to cut their rosters down to 53 men. Unfortunately for the Bears, this is an embarrassment to the players and all staff.  This suggests that there is lack of faith in developing prospects, and inability to draft.

Jarron Gilbert, was drafted 68th overall in the third round, from San Jose State. He is famously known for jumping out of a pool without using hands or the wall as support. He showed a tremendous amount of athleticism in that video. After the tragic passing of Gaines Adams in January and the release of Alex Brown and Adewale Ogunleye, held hope that Gilbert could gain a spot in the rotation, but defensive line coach Rod Marinelli and head coach Lovie Smith didn't want to wait another year

Juaquin Iglesias was drafted 99th overall in the third round from the University of Oklahoma. He perhaps may have been drafted higher than he should have been, since Sam Bradford, his college quarterback was selected as the first overall pick in the 2010 draft. New offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system often requires four wide receivers, Iglesias was cut and failed to impress anyone this training camp. Even Earl Bennett, who has not practiced at all since having hamstring problems in training camp was kept on the roster over Iglesias.

When a team fails and misses to address key needs in draft, usually the man held responsible is the general manager, Jerry Angelo. Let us not forget, there are scouts who are paid to observe players based on their potential and their ability to fit into the Bears' scheme should be cut as well.

The regular season starts in a week, and many analysts are not picking the Bears to make the playoffs as a wild card. If the Bears don't make the playoffs in 2010 Smith, Angelo and perhaps Phillips will be fired. Their $100M spending spree in free agency in 2010 may go as the biggest waste of money in NFL history.
