Colts Cut Day: Roster Gets Shakeup in a Variety of Ways
Today was a rather odd day here in Indiana. I'm not just talking about the 67-degree weather either.
Among many things, today was a big day for the state, with the College Football season opening on it's first Saturday of this season. Brian Kelly is leading the Notre Dame Irish into a new era against in-state rival Purdue. The Indiana Pacers had a big trade lined up ready to announce, only to have it nixed in the final moments. In a related story, Roy Hibbert is now involved in professional MMA training.
today is also a big day in the NFL because every team is required to have their rosters trimmed to just 53 players by 4pm. That in itself is news worthy, but the Colts actually had quite a few things going on with their roster today, from cuts to trades and even off-the-field issues.
Yahoo! Sports first reported yesterday that Colts defensive tackle Fili Moala had been arrested for DWI. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says Moala was stopped at 2:31 a.m. Friday after an officer noticed his vehicle speeding. A police report says the 25-year-old Moala admitted to an officer that he had “five or six drinks” at a club It said he had a blood-alcohol level of .10 percent. The legal limit to drive is .08 percent.
As far as the trade (something the Colts rarely do) they were trying to add to the depth at the CB position after losing this year's third-round draft pick to a season-ending injury. According to their official website, Colts.com, the Colts have acquired third-year defensive back Justin Tryon from the Washington Redskins, for an undisclosed future draft pick. The Colts have had six defensive backs go on season-ending injured reserve.
Now the juicy stuff. All teams were required to trim the rosters today, and many of the Colts' cuts have already been made official.
According to the NFL, the Colts have cut WR/KR Brandon James and Ray Fisher. Fellow WR/KR Sam Giguere was also cut by the team, as the team saw no real reason to retain him. Backup quarterback Tom Brandstater was also cut by the Colts, perhaps thinking Painter is a "suitable" backup for Peyton.
The list will probably grow as information becomes available later in the day, but the main concerns were addressed in my opinion with the kick-return game. It looks like the hometown Devin Moore will be the guy returning kicks for the boys in blue this season.
