Brett Favre's Move to New York Jets Mirrors Dale Junior's Move to HMS

Mary Jo BuchananAug 6, 2008

The news is out and Brett Favre is now headed off to the New York Jets. Who could have ever imagined that the legendary Green Bay Packer would be in any other uniform or playing on any other field than Lambeau?

Packer President Mark Murphy and General Manager Ted Thompson issued a joint statement saying, "Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state".

And with that, Favre is off and running to the great state of New York (actually New Jersey).

For NASCAR fans, this scenario is eerily familiar and brings back memories of just a short time ago when Dale Earnhardt Jr. made his announcement that he would be leaving his father's company to go with Rick Hendrick, joining one of the most talented racing stables at Hendrick Motor Sports.

DEI issued a statement very similar to the Packers leadership, in essence closing that chapter of history and releasing their driver to pursue other options.

Favre, like Earnhardt Jr., has had much invested in the team that launched and nurtured his career. It has been a part of his soul and psyche as an athlete. But both Favre and Junior have had to make that most difficult decision, leaving the teams that they have loved and been a part of for so long.

Brett, like Junior, is also taking a gamble. Both have jumped into uncharted territory.  There are new relationships to negotiate and, yes, new pressures to prove that the decision to move is a sound one.

Favre, like Junior, will have to adjust to new places, new people, new equipment, and even new uniforms (interesting that the green of AMP Energy Drink is similar to that Jets green).

Football fans, like NASCAR fans, will also have to adjust. As odd as it was initially to see Dale Junior in anything but the No. 8 red Budweiser car, it will be equally as strange to see Brett Favre for the first time in a Jets uniform, taking the field at the New Jersey stadium.

Favre will do well to follow Junior's lead, making the transition with the quiet confidence that both now exude. As Juniors' fans follow his run for the championship in his new ride, Favre fans will now have to see if their hero has the stuff to make it in his new role as leader of the J-E-T-S.
