Ronaldinho Aims To Make Olympics History

Jeff HarbertAug 6, 2008

Former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho is eager for the Olympic games to get underway. The AC Milan midfielder is part of the Brazil team who hopes to win the Olympics for the first time in the country’s history.

Ronaldinho is one of only two players over 23 for Brazil, and his team will be relying on him to guide them to success. With Brazil set to play their first game of the tournament tomorrow against Belgium, Ronaldinho is as motivated as ever.

"What motivates me the most is the chance to make history in Brazilian football and win this first gold medal," Ronaldinho said. "We all know that if we win this medal we will make history. It's an unprecedented title It's a very important competition, just as important to us as the World Cup and other big tournaments."

The Olympics gold medal is actually the only significant title Brazil has yet to win, but Ronaldinho and co. are clearly intent on changing that this year.

"Very few players have an opportunity to participate in two Olympics, and I'm glad I'm having this chance to win what we let slip away in the past," Ronaldinho added. "It's a special moment in my career and I hope I'll be able to do my best here.”

Despite winning the World Cup five times, the closest Brazil has come to winning the Olympics was in 1984 and 1988 when the Brazilians went home with silver medals around their necks. Brazil has as good of a chance as ever to change that this year.

Fans of Brazil won’t be the only people keeping a close eye on Brazil during the tournament, however. AC Milan will also be closely watching their newest signing, Ronaldinho, who is yet to make his debut for the Italian giants.

In the meantime, Ronaldinho, captain for the Olympics, and his Brazil teammates will do everything it takes to finally bring back a gold medal.
