Bernard Hopkins: Light Heavyweight Show Down Or Let Down?

joel seemanSep 2, 2010

Former long-time reigning middleweight and light heavyweight champion Bernard the executioner Hopkins is set to return to the ring in December and face Jean Pascal.

The very same Pascal that beat Bad Chad Dawson just a few weeks ago.

Bernard Hopkins has long been a man who can give any fighter a boxing lesson. However, the question remains that at 45 does he still pose a threat to a young powerful speedy fighter like Pascal?

The answer is yes.

Bernard Hopkins can turn back the clock and look 26 years old. Bernard has not fought top opposition in two years if you really look at his opponents you will see that.

His last three opponents included Enrique Ornelas, a fighter who is currently 30-6 and lost to Marco Antonio Rubio a fighter that Kelly Pavlik put beating on.

Kelly Pavlik himself was one of Bernard Hopkins last three opponents and was expected to beat Hopkins due to his power and the fact that Hopkins was well into his forty's.

But on that night Bernard Hopkins would show the world that it didn't matter how old you were, if you were better you were better.

Hopkins last opponent was the aging Roy Jones Jr., a man who was once one of the most feared fighters on the planet.

Hopkins and Jones faced off 17 years prior to that rematch and Roy Jones beat Hopkins that night.

However if the rematch did not show us anything worth watching.

Hopkins is not facing just any fighter in December he is fighting Jean Pascal.

A fighter who beat the multi-talented Chad Dawson last month. Pascal has the power to become the first man to stop Hopkins.

It really wouldn't surprise me if Hopkins was flat on his back in this fight due to how active and ferocious Pascal is.

In the past two years, Pascal has faced far better opposition like Carl Froch, Chad Dawson, and Adrian Diaconu these are all young elite top ranked fighters.

It is my understanding at the moment that both the WBC and IBO light heavyweight titles will be on the line.

If I was a betting man, I would lean towards Pascal to retain his titles. However this is boxing and Hopkins we are talking about, so anything can happen.
