U.S. Open Tennis 2010 TV Schedule: What Matches To Watch on Tuesday

Tom KinslowAug 30, 2010

The second day of action at the U.S. Open brings some of the top players in the world out on to the court for the first time as they try to capture a grand slam title.

Adding to the intrigue will be the appearance of some American players who are sure to pump up the crowd in Queens.

There are plenty of great matches on Tuesday's schedule, but here are five that you should either DVR or watch live because there is going to be some serious talent on display in all of them.

#5: Maria Sharapova Vs. Jarmilla Groth

1 of 5
CINCINNATI - AUGUST 14: Maria Sharapova of Russia hits a backhand return during her semifinal match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia on day six of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open on August 14, 2010 at the Lindner Family Ten

Sharapova is still trying to bounce back from shoulder surgery that hurt her 2009 campaign in a big way.

However, this year, Sharapova is starting to round back into the form that had her competing for and winning grand slam events. The Russian is seeded 14th in the tournament and this could be the start of a cinderella-esque run for her.

First up is Groth who has never really made a run at a grand slam event and she won't here. I like Sharapova in straight sets, but I'd keep an eye on her just to see how her form is.

#4: Novak Djokovic Vs. Viktor Troicki

The former U.S. Open runner-up is back at it again tomorrow after two straight semi-final appearances.

Djokovic has gotten close plenty of times but only has one grand slam victory, the 2008 Australian Open, to show for it. The Serbian is seeded third and will need to get through Federer to reach the final, something he has done before and something I believe he can do again.

Djokovic's first victim is fellow countryman Troicki. He's never made a dent in any grand slam and he'll have another short stay this year. Watch this match just to see Djokovic muscle his opponent off the court.

#3: Caroline Wozniacki Vs. Chelsey Gullickson

3 of 5
NEW HAVEN, CT - AUGUST 28: Top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark returns a shot to Nadia Petrova of Russia during the final of the Pilot Pen tennis tournament at the Connecticut Tennis Center on August 28, 2010 in New Haven, Connecticut. Wozniacki beat

Not only is Wozniacki the top seed in the women's draw, she's pretty darn cute if I say so myself.

The Denmark native is looking for her first career slam after finishing as a runner up at last year's U.S. Open. Wozniacki made it to the quarters of the French Open this year and has proven she can go deep into major tournaments.

Adding to the drama is her opponent. Gullickson is from the good ol' US of A and it'd be fun to root for a clear underdog, especially one from the United States.

Sure, Gullickson doesn't stand a chance, but I'd tune in just in case there's some good theater. The crowd should be revved up for the hometown girl.

#2: James Blake Vs. Kristof Vliegen

I think the crowd will be the most fired up for this match over any of the others on the schedule -- including the top match on this list.

Blake is an American and the USA's best shot at having a men's winner outside of Andy Roddick.  He's not really the best player but has plenty of skill, just never really put it together in my opinion.

I like Blake and he'll have to go through the Belgian Vliegen to do it. He's never gotten past the first round at the Open and he won't tomorrow. I expect Blake to get the job done between a very vocal and supportive crowd.

#1: Rafael Nadal Vs. Teymuraz Gabashvili

5 of 5
CINCINNATI - AUGUST 20: Rafael Nadal of Spain converses with the chair umpire after a call during his match against Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus during Day 5 of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on August 20

Rafa will kick off his latest quest to complete the career grand slam. Nadal comes into the tournament as the top seed and coming off of his second Wimbledon victory.

Nadal has never made the finals at the U.S. Open despite winning seven grand slam titles in his career. The past two years he's made it to the semis before exiting and maybe this is the year where Rafa finally gets over the hump and gets the career slam.

He'll take on Gabashvili, a Russian who has never made it past the second round at the U.S. Open. He shouldn't get too comfy in his hotel room, he'll be checking out shortly -- and in straight sets.
