Ivan Calderon Suffers First Defeat in His Professional Career
Undefeated Puerto Rican boxer Ivan Calderon suffered his first defeat in his professional boxing career in the hands of Mexican WBA Jnunior Flyweight champion Giovanni Segura via eighth round knock out.
Calderon was doing well in the early rounds but appeared losing steam in the later rounds.
The undefeated boxer took a lot of punishment and suffered a cut in the eighth round.
Segura relentlessly pursued Calderon with a series of hard punches and a power hook to the body sent Calderon down for the full count.
It was an exciting fight from start to finish.
The loss by Calderon marks the end of the the undefeated Puerto Rican boxer's remarkable winning streak spanning almost a decade since he first attended the 2000 Olympic games in Australia.
On August 25, 2007, he ascended to the light flyweight division when he defeated Hugo Cázares for the WBO's light flyweight championship. Calderón successfully defended this title against Juan Esquer, Nelson Dieppa, Rodel Mayol, Jesús Iribe, and Cázares.
Calderón is The Ring's light flyweight champion.
In June 2009, Ivan Calderon successfully kept his WBO light flyweight crown with his technical draw decision over a Filipino boxer Rodel Mayol at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
Calderon was bloodied at the end of the sixth round when the referee stopped the fight on instruction from the ring physician.
Before losing to Segura, Calderon returned to the ring after nine months of rest and fought Jesus Iribe who surprised him with a second round flash knockdown but managed to recover in the later rounds.
Calderon won the fight against Iribe via a unanimous decision.
Ivan Calderon's first loss in his professional career could signal the start of his downslide as he turns 35 in January.
Calderon is one of the lucky boxers who remained undefeated until his first loss to Segura, by capitalizing on his ring skill rather than on his power punches which leave much to be desired.
