UFC 118 Pay-per-View Play-by-Play: BJ Penn (15-6) vs. Frankie Edgar (12-1)

UFC Lightweight Championship

1st Round—This UFC lightweight title bout and main event will be refereed by Herb Dean.  BJ hits with several shots, but is dropped to his back by Edgar.  BJ quickly goes for an arm of Edgar’s, however Edgar defends and gets back on top and in BJ’s guard. 

BJ stays busy from the bottom position controlling Edgar’s arm.  BJ gets up and stands in front of Edgar.  Edgar circles around Penn and misses with a combination of punches.  Penn lands a couple of inside uppercuts and then backs off.  Edgar lands a left and then a jab up the middle. 

Penn lands a knee as Edgar shoots in for the takedown.  Edgar gets two consecutive takedowns and lands in side control while on the ground.  Penn gets right back up and squares off again.  Edgar has his kick blocked by BJ, who misses with a wild uppercut.  Penn makes Edgar miss and hits with a left hand. 

Edgar hits with a leg kick and then hits with a left hand.  Penn answers with a right hand and a hook of his own.  Edgar is quicker than Penn, and makes him miss.  Penn lands a body shot, but Edgar lands a kick to the body of Penn as the round ends.  (Edgar 10-9)

2nd Round—The 2nd Round begins and both fighters look fairly fresh.  Penn looks cool, calm, and comfortable, as does Edgar. 

Penn grazes Edgar with a head kick and follows it with a low leg kick.  Penn hits with a left hook, but gets tagged with a body kick.  Edgar makes BJ eat a knee on a takedown attempt.  Penn stuffs a takedown attempt and pushes Edgar away. 

BJ blocks a front kick by Edgar and ducks under a hard right hand.  BJ hits with a left hook but is taken to the ground by Edgar.  Edgar is now on top and trying to pass BJ’s guard.  BJ gets back up and eats a punch from Edgar.  Edgar hits with a left jab.  Penn blocks a kick from Edgar. 

Edgar dances around BJ and pushes a jab in his face.  He then follows that with a kick to the body.  BJ hits with one hook and Edgar hits with three.  Edgar tags BJ with a low leg kick as the round ends.  (Edgar 10-9)

3rd Round—Edgar looks confident and BJ looks concerned as they come out for the 3rd Round.  Penn defends a takedown and hits with a left hand.  Penn hits with a right hand but takes a couple of combinations for his trouble. 

BJ hits with a left and makes Edgar miss with a left.  Edgar misses with a left hand and BJ hits with a right hand.  Penn hits with a knee up the middle, and then gets tagged with some leg kicks.  Edgar hits with a right hand over the top. 

Edgar then puts together a powerful combination of punches and then turns to BJ’s body.  Edgar hits with a heavy kick to the lead leg of BJ.  BJ hits with a shot to the body of Edgar.  Edgar can't take BJ to the ground but hits with a left hand. 

Edgar shoots in for the takedown but can't get it, he does land a nice combo of punches.  Edgar hits with a right hand and another with no counter from BJ.  (Edgar 10-9)

4th Round—This round is underway and started with a takedown by BJ.  Penn works to pass Edgar’s guard.  Edgar holds onto BJ’s head, but BJ continues to press forward.  Edgar scrambles and gets to his feet. 

Penn catches him with a right hand before he gets up.  Edgar drops BJ with a low leg kick.  Penn defends with his guard, but Edgar is attacking his body.  Penn gets his arm free and is trying to sneak in a submission. 

Edgar presses through it and gets his arm free.  Edgar hits with several hard shots to the face of Penn.  Penn stays alert but can't get to his feet.  Edgar begins to kick as Penn gets to his feet.  Edgar hits with a left hook and then backs off. 

He comes in and hits with a kick, and a couple of right hands.  Penn defends and checks a couple of kicks from Edgar.  Penn hits with a right hand as the bell ends the round.  (Edgar 10-9)

5th Round—This is the final round of this rematch.  Edgar continues to look very fresh.  Edgar hits with a kick to the body.  Penn gets a takedown and Edgar goes for the head of Penn. 

Penn is trying to pass Edgar’s guard, but can't.  Edgar gets the reversal, and is now on top of Penn.  Edgar is trying to work the body of Penn.  He also mixes in an elbow and some body shots. 

Penn can't get to his feet and instead holds onto Edgar’s body.  Penn is almost out of trouble, but Edgar won't allow him to get to his feet.  Edgar stays on top and smothers him with his body.  They both get to their feet and Edgar tags him with two uppercuts.  Edgar answers Penn’s one punch with three of his own.  Edgar hits with a knee and then hits with a low leg kick as the fight ends.  (Edgar 10-9)

Official Decision—Edgar over Penn via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
