UFC 118 Results: Randy Couture Dominates Toney, What's Next For Captain America?

Andrew BarrAug 28, 2010

This evening James Toney stepped into the Octagon to try and prove that a boxer could dominate an MMA fighter even in an MMA bout and, to the utter surprise of no one, he had his ass handed to him.

Within the first twenty seconds of the fight Couture grabbed a leg, took his opponent down, passed right into mount and went to work on Toney. Toney tried his best to control Couture's posture but it was clear that he was unfamiliar with the situation and downright confused.

After a few minutes of softening Toney up with punches Couture sunk in an arm triangle and put James away in what was probably the least competitive MMA fight of all time.

So, just like everyone anticipated Toney's lack of a ground game cost him the fight. That's not interesting. What is interesting? Couture has won three fights in a row.

At the age 47 Couture probably doesn't have a lot of time left in his career (then again people were saying that years ago, so who knows). With the reputation Couture has and a three fight win streak going for him you would think he has to be near a title shot.

However, if you look at his most recent fights, the three fight win streak doesn't look all that impressive. He edged Brandon Vera is a close decision. He beat a washed up Mark Coleman. Now he's beaten James Toney, someone with no MMA experience.

I understand that Captain America is a huge draw for the UFC and that people hate to see him lose, but it's time for Dana to stop babying Couture. They have to put him in there with someone dangerous. It's only then that we're going to see how much Couture really has left. A top 5 guy probably isn't a good idea yet, but someone like Griffin, Franklin or Thiago Silva would be good.

Don't get me wrong here folks, I'm not trying to hate on Randy; I love the man. I just want to know if he still has what it takes to be in title contention and I'm not sure because it's been a while since he's fought anyone significant.
