Redskins Vs. Jets Analysis: Not a Show Stopper But Improvement

Brandon KeenerAug 28, 2010

Let me just say right off the bat, congratulations to the Washington Redskins for beating a very good New York Jets football team. All week long, one after another would go on Comcast Sports Net or ESPN 980 quoting something classic.

"It's a great challenge for us," said CB Carlos Rogers to ESPN980 radio prior to the game.

"Rex Ryan does some crazy things," starting center Casey Rabach told Comcast SportsNet also adding that they "are up for the challenge."

Flash forward to the game. The Redskins held a sputtering New York Jets offense, with names like LaDainian Tomlinson, Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Laveranues Coles, Jerricho Cotchery and others to a single touchdown.

Washington's offense performed just a little bit better than the Jets, for once making the most out of the other team's misfortune. The Jets turned the ball over four times allowing the Skins to turn some of those opportunities into key points.

"It's just frustrating when you turn the ball over like that," Jets Coach Rex Ryan said. "It just kills you."

Most notable plays of the game:

  • Rex Grossman played well for the injured Donovan McNabb going 8-16 in passes and 111 yards. Unfortunately, he was not able to handle a shotgun snap just after the 2:00 minute warning in the second quarter which bounced out of his own end zone for a safety, at the time making the score 6-5.
  • Nick Folk banged his only PAT attempt off the left upright. *Finalist for Homer Simpson "D'oh!" Moment of the Day.
  • Skins RB Larry Johnson showed a spark of his old self. He ran for 42 yards on only 9 attempts and caught the game winning 15 yard pass for a TD.

Overall grade: B (would have been nicer to see TD's instead of FG's but a win is a win)

QB play: B (like it or not Grossman and the gang kept the Skins in the game)

RB play: C+ (Willie Parker averaged only 2.0 YPC)

WR/TE play: B+ (nobody had a YPC of less than 6.0)

O-Line play: B+ (I can only give them this rating because the QB was sacked twice)

D-Line play: C (The Jets have a great O-Line but they need to get more penetration)

LB play: A (Did a great job of causing fumbles and mixing up packages)

CB/S play: A (Great job keeping the big plays down and creating turnovers)

K play: A (perfect 10 point night, can't ask for more. Bet the Jets want to swap)

P play: C (Bidwell did not get one punt inside the 20, but showed some leg strength)

Return game play: C (Nothing really special or overpowering here)
