WWE Smackdown 8/27/10 Review: Brothers Unite

Graham GSM MatthewsAug 28, 2010

1. Kane def. Rey Mysterio in a No DQ Match

-I was looking forward to this match in the main event, but it makes sense to have it before Kane’s promo and Alberto Del Rio’s match. However, it was a nice show opener and a great match, better than their match at SummerSlam.

I liked how they actually used weapons, and more than a chair since in most No DQ matches, the participants don’t take advantage of that. Great finish with the chokeslam on the chair, and good decision to have Kane win to push him forward with his title match at Night of Champions.

I thought Alberto Del Rio’s victory last week was a one-time thing over Mysterio, but after the attack, I think it would be a good idea to continue the feud as it would really continue Rio’s push if feuding with a top star. The attack helped continue it, but I’m curious how it will continue at Night of Champions if neither are champions.

2. CM Punk def. JTG

-One word: Worthless. A waste of time. This is worse than Superstars quality. Why did this match even happen? If CM Punk wanted to dominate, why not just face a local athlete? The finish was horrendous, and it seems like the only reason this match happened was to put CM Punk in action and fill the card.

I’m not saying JTG should be released, because Smackdown needs a worthless jobber.

3. Kofi Kingston def. Dolph Ziggler by Count-out (Intercontinental Championship match)

-First off, let me say everyone has become bored with this feud and when I first saw it advertised, I almost wanted to watch Disney Channel all night instead (which is almost as bad as shooting myself). It wouldn’t hut to see a promo or a tag mach in between these matches every week.

Anyway, was there any doubt on the match finish? It will be EXACTLY how the Regal-Punk feud went down early last year. These matches of Ziggler and Kofi and good, but repetitive and boring because it’s the same thing every week. Hopefully, the feud ends at Night of Champions with a No Holds Barred Match. But I’m putting this match last night as a miss.

4. Jack Swagger def. MVP by DQ (Jack Swagger Senior Invitational)

-Boring as hell. I’m not trashing amateur wrestling, but was this really necessary? Swagger dominated, won by DQ, and MVP didn’t give a crap? Why would he walk off, without attacking Swagger? This continues a boring feud we have seen at least seven times.

The only good thing that could possibly come out is MVP elevating to the IC Title Picture or Swagger back to main event.

5. Alberto Del Rio def. local competitor

-Since when did local competitors come out to entrance music? I like it. Alberto’s entrance is really unique, and I am very excited to see him as a rising star. The match was better than most jobber matches, and definitley better than the crap match with JTG and CM Punk earlier tonight.

Nice, good match with the competitor getting some moves in, and an awesome finish by Del Rio. I was surprised not to see Mysterio come down and attack him.

6. Big Show def. Luke Gallows

-Not a great match, but it was acceptable. Boring, but acceptable. I’m not sure where this is headed, hopefully not continuing the feud with Big Show. Serena got released, so is this the end of the Straight Edge Society? I hope so. Either bring in new members or disband to bring CM Punk to main event.

As for the match finish, predictable. Luke Gallows couldn’t win, and Kelly was only used to get on TV at ringside.

*Undertaker Return and Promo w/ Kane

-Let’s start by saying Kane has the best promos in the WWE along with CM Punk, and the best promos since this huge push. I’m glad to see Taker’s return, and this is the best promo in a long time for Taker, getting personal with his brother.

They didn’t talk about the attack itself at all, or why Kane accused everyone else, and that bothered me. Besides that, I’m glad the show left off on a good note with Kane getting the last word again. This promo persuaded me to like this feud and buy Night of Champions, as long they finally confirm the match.

Final Review: Decent show. Very few good matches, and no real feuds as in matches besides the same old IC Title matches. Forgettable, and it seems as of late, the show seems like a chore.

As a side note, I would have liked to see Hardy, McIntyre, Christian, and Rhodes on the show to further the feud. Hopefully the show heats up as we near Night of Champions and their Syfy Debut.
