Clipped Wings?: 2010-11 Philadelphia Eagles Season Preview

Chris KentAug 27, 2010

The 2009-10 season of the Philadelphia Eagles didn't end well. The Eagles lost 2 straight games in Dallas. This ended up being the final straw for the Eagles' management as they traded their franchise quarterback, Donovan McNabb.

Now in charge, former 2nd Round Draft Pick, Kevin Kolb. The management team drafted Brandon Graham, the talented Defensive End/ Linebacker from Michigan, Free Safety Nate Allen, and a plethora of young talent from the draft.

Former Head Coach, Dick Jauron, speculated as a successor to Sean McDermott, but for now is only a senior assistant, and defensive backs coach, and is one of the more veteran members of the coaching staff.

For tenured Head Coach, Andy Reid, does his play calling style change? Does he try to implement the run? Don't forget, when Jeff Garcia took the reins in 2007, Reid and company made a more balanced play calling structure....Does Coach Reid return to that format? Or does he return to the pass-happy play calling? Only time will tell......

Week 1: Pack Is Back in Philly, 4:15pm on FOX

1 of 17

The Eagles take on the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are coming off a 11-5 season, losing twice vs. the despised Minnesota Vikings. They lost a 51-45 Overtime thriller in Arizona, in Arizona.

Aaron Rodgers, the new gunslinger in Green Bay, had a terrific season, with a terrible offensive line. The offensive line was injured, and allowed over 50 sacks. Running Back Ryan Grant only fumbled 1 time, and proved that they can control the time of possession.

Charles Woodson, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is a ball-hawking, hard-hittin' cornerback who will most-likely cover the best Wide Receiver of the Birds, and cause young QB Kevin Kolb to have trouble getting the ball to Jackson.

The Eagles will be in the Kelly Green throwback uniforms for this game, with the first day of the rest of our McNabb-in-Philly lives. Kevin Kolb takes over as the quarterback, and this will be his first true test as a full time starter.

Prediction: Win for the Eagles, VERY Close Game, David Akers wins this game and the Kolb era begins at 1-0.

Meanwhile, anchored by Trent Cole, the defensive unit lost middle linebacker Stewart Bradley, who is an emerging linebacker, does the defense get better? With the addition of Jauron, are the young defensive backs more expirenced then your average younger corners.

The Lowly Lions in the Motor City, 1pm on FOX

2 of 17

The lowly Lions, who might not be lowly for long. With up-and-coming Matthew Stafford, and a HUGE target in Calvin Johnson. They also drafted Running Back Jahvid Best from California.

Stafford, as a rookie, threw for 2,267 yards with 13 TDs.

Johnson caught 67 passes, for 984 yards with 5 TDs.

Meanwhile, ball-hawking cornerback Asante Samuel will most likely cover Stafford's favorite target, but if we learned anything about the National Football League, anything can happen, but I don't see it happening that the Lions upset the Eagles.

Do the Jags have a good "Mo-Jo"?, 4:05 on FOX

3 of 17

With the Jags, they depend on their "Mo-Jo", and if your going to have a "Mo-Jo", have THE "Mo-Jo" Maurice Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew is the BEST player on the Jags, and have rushed for over 1, 300 yards with 15 TDs.

Meanwhile, Trent Cole, the talented pass-rusher, will attempt to take over the edge, and blow by who-ever is the Jags Left Tackle in Week 3 in 2010.

The defense have a positive impact finding wholes in that offensive line and taking advantage of David Garrard, not the most agile quarterback, you'll find, but don't give any pro quarterback time, or he will kill your coverage. There is always a hole in a defensive coverage....

I think the Eagles take the win in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

McNabb vs. the Eagles? Who woulda thunk it?, 4:15 on FOX

4 of 17

It's been a LONG time coming. We knew that McNabb may not have been a Eagle forever, but NOBODY would have thought he would have been a Redskin.

McNabb was injured in the 1st game of the year of 2009-10 on a rushing touchdown in Carolina, braking 2 ribs. He returned after week 4 and had a good season, with 3,553 yards and 22 TDs.

However, the recieving core is limited. With young guns like Devin Thomas, and fast, pass catching veterans like Santana Moss and Joey Galloway, McNabb ACTUALLY has a running game behind him. Yes! It's like Mel Gibson being squeaky clean after the phone tapes....You wouldn't believe it, but this is actually true. Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, and Rock Cartwright have speed and power to go along with McNabb's arm.

The defense is a solid defense with a good secondary, and may have extra motivation in supporting their new QB against his old team, not to mention it is a divisional rival.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have been good vs. the Redskins, and the Eagles do know McNabb's tendencies....I think McNabb goes off on the secondary of the Eagles. But I think LeSean McCoy and the big Eagles offensive line can help the young Kolb and McCoy, but McNabb gets the win vs. the Eagles.

Singletary Says....., 8:20 on NBC

Kolb and the Eagles take on Gore and the 49ers on Sunday Night Football....

The Eagles will have thier wings full in this meeting. Patrick Willis, Frank Gore, and Michael Crabtree will be looking to protect their gold mine. Patrick Wills will be looking to explode threw the O-Line of the Birds, as LeSean McCoy looks to burst through holes opened by Peters and Herremans on the left side of the line of scrimmage.

Besides, I didn't even mention Vernon Davis, the star Tight End, who may be covered by...? Stewart Bradley? Too slow. Asante Samuel. Too small. Eh, Andy, you have a problem.

Also entering the fray, how do the Eagles or any team for that matter, stop or hope to contain a healthy Brian Westbrook? Westbrook is a talented pass catcher, runner, and all-around yard gainer, and he could, like McNabb, look to be getting a one-up on his former employers...

Kolb and the Eagles lose in San Fran...

Dirty Bird vs. the Eagle...What bird becomes dinner?, 1pm on FOX

6 of 17

Last time the Eagles played in Atlanta, guess who had a good game. Wait for it, wait for it...Michael Vick!!! Yes, Michael Vick, the Wild-cat QB of the Eagles.

Matt Ryan, the Philadelphia-area native, threw for 2,916 yards for 22 TDs, but is still a young QB that is taking on an expirenced defensive staff. Michael "The Burner" Turner had a good season with 10 TDs and over 850 yards rushing.

But Atlanta has a talented defense with Peria Jerry leading the charge. The talented Jerry could cause a problem for the Eagles O-Line, but I think the Eagles can maintain Jerry.

Not to mention, the future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. Don't forget about Gonzalez....

Eagles squeak the win the the Dirty South.....

CJ2K vs. D-Jax Titan vs. Eagle, 1pm on FOX

7 of 17

What do the Titans have?

  • Playmaking Quarterback? Check
  • Playmaking Running Back? Check
  • Shutdown Cornerback? Check

What do the Eagles have?

  • Playmakng Wide Reciever? Check
  • Playmaking Tight End? Check
  • Playmaking Cornerback? Check

So, what does the win come down to? Defense? Offense? Special Teams? Coaching? Answer: All of the above. I see Chris Johnson going off on the Eagles, and Jeremy Maclin has a big game, 100 yards, 2 TDs. It's only just a prediction...

Archie's Son Comes to Town, 4:15pm on CBS

9 of 17

Peyton Manning, the model of the prototypical NFL QB. Over 130 wins as a professional, 1st round pick, arguably the best QB in the NFL winning 4 Most Valuable Peyton awards....oops, Most Valuable Player.

Peyton Manning has a stout offensive line and responds under pressure, by making you pay. Manning was only sacked 13 times last season. He has a quick release and his favorite targets, Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Dallas Clark.

But, looking to counter Archie's first son is Asante Samuel, Ellis Hobbs, and Joselio Hanson. Trent Cole looks to strip Manning, and Juqua Parker wants to breathe down the neck of Peyton Manning...

Archie's first son is going to win in Philly....

McNabb vs. Kolb 2010 Round 2 in DC, ESPN Monday Night Football at 8:30pm

10 of 17

Que the Monday Night Football Theme.....

McNabb takes on Kolb for the 2nd time....

McNabb looks to take advantage of the secondary of the young Eagles....

Kolb looks to have the help of DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy, Jason Avant, Trent Cole, and Stewart Bradley to take down the Redskins...

The new No.1 in Philadelphia looks to get revenge for the win in his house by the former No.1, so Kolb is going to FedEx Field in Landover, and grabs a win on national television...27-21

Archie's Other Son....8:20pm on NBC

11 of 17

Big Blue, The New York Football Giants, coming into the year flying under the radar.

With the addition of the "The Second Freak" Jason Pierre-Paul, the defensive line with Osi, Kiwanuka, and JPP looks a lot harder to defend.

By Week 11, Kolb should have his jitters down and be ready to stifle the Big Blue secondary with Green bombs to DeSean Jackson.

Eagles christen the New Medowlands Stadium with a win.

Cutler 2 Hester? Cutler 2 Other Team Is More Likely To Happen 1pm on FOX

12 of 17

Jay Cutler came to Chicago after having a problem in Denver with Josh McDaniels. Well, Cutler, quite frankly was BAD. Not awful, but BAD.

Cutler threw 22 Interceptions in 2009...His only No.1 target in Chicago is in his 2nd year as being a full-time wide reciever, and after that he has Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, and Devin Aromashodu. I think that Asante, Hobbs, and Macho Harris/Joselio Hanson can shut down Cutler and give the Eagles offensive unit time to work the clock....

Eagles win in definitive fashion....

Texas Sized Mashup-Texas vs. Eagles, 8:20 on the NFL Network

13 of 17

Matt Schuab or Andre Johnson isn't going to decide this game. It'll be Mario Williams. The suprise No.1 draft pick in 2006 is going to be a major player in Houston and he has the ability to decide a game.

With Demeco Ryans lurking behind him, the Eagles have to pick their poison in this game. With the dominant offense that can put up 40 points, and the defense that has the potential to be great.

We'll all see how young the Eagles play vs. the "other" Texas team...

Eagles lose in this game dropping them to 7-4 on the year.....

How 'Bout 'Dem Cowboys?!?: 'Dem 'Boys vs. Those Birds, 8:30 on NBC

14 of 17

....Being swept by the Cowboys is not an easy thing to swallow, especially being the supporter of the Burn Dallas Committee...

But Tony Romo has been stellar in 2009, and he looks to continue in 2010. The Dallas 3-headed Running Back Rotation of Tashard Choice, Felix Jones, and Marion Barber III, along with Tight End Jason Witten, and Roy Williams, Dez Bryant, and breakout star Miles Austin lead a top-notch offense into the Billion Dollar Staduim in Texas...

...But DeMarcus Ware, Terrence Newman, and Jay Ratliff remind us that the defense is just as good as the offensve unit...

Cowboys win at home vs the Eagles....Let's just hope we keep it respectable....

Farvelous: Old Man Winter vs. Young-Guns in Philly, 1pm on FOX

16 of 17

Week 16 now here in the "last" season of the fabled legend Brett Farve. He hasn't responded well in the cold recently, and around Week 16, it's pretty cold in Philly. Farve responds by beating the Eagles 24-17...

Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin are big in this game...not with the deep ball, but with the nickel-and-dime passes...

Week 17: 'Dem 'Boys vs. 'Dem Birds

17 of 17

My final predictions: Eagles go 7-9, get swept by Washington and Dallas.

Kevin Kolb has 20 TDs, and 13 INTs. LeSean McCoy has 900 yards of rushing with 7 TDs. Brent Celek has 900 yards receiving, and DeSean Jackson gets 1,000 yards of recieving, Trent Cole has 8 sacks, alas in a losing season....

Cowboys win the Week 17 match-up: 31 to 13
