Strikeforce: An Open Letter to Jorge Gurgel
Dear Jorge,
Let's me start this letter out by saying that I am in no way trying to kick you while you're down.
I'm sure you've been kicking yourself enough these past few days since the Strikeforce: Houston card.
I'm mainly writing this letter to urge you to stop this ridiculous fantasy that you have been having for the majority of your MMA career.
Not sure what I am talking about? Ok, well let me make it clearer for you:
YOU ARE NOT A K-1 LEVEL STRIKER; YOU ARE A BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU BLACKBELT!
My apologies for being so blunt, but frankly, we are all pretty tired of seeing you get beaten time after time in your attempts to show the world that you can defeat someone in the stand up game.
At first, I was able to ignore it, but your last fight against K.J. Noons shows that you need to switch it up as quickly as possible.
Too often being stubborn in your ways can work against a person, forcing them to have to learn a painful lesson.
Not convinced that you should change it up? Well let's look at a breakdown of your record:
Record 13 - 7 - 0 (Win – Loss – Draw) Wins 0 (T)KOs
9 Submissions
4 DecisionsLosses 1 (T)KOs
2 Submissions
4 Decisions![]()
In looking at this, one stat screams out at me immediately. Of your 13 victories, 9 of them have come via submission. Jorge, that's over 50% of your wins.
Another interesting stat is that you've never won via any form of a knockout. Basically, all that this chart tells me is that you need to start taking a page out of GSP's book, and use your striking in small doses to create openings for your ground game.
I don't mean to be so hard on you Jorge, but I'm concerned for your safety as a fighter. K.J. Noons knocked the stuffing out of you, and then topped it off with a cheap ( & illegal) knee to your face while you were on the ground trying to figure out what day it was.
You are a Brazilian Jorge. Stay true to your roots and use your Jiu Jitsu. Trust me, your brain, career, and fans will thank you for it.
Sincerely,
Will
