Going for Gold: 2010 NFL Preseason All-Defensive Team

No NameAug 26, 2010

Using a 4-3 style defense, I have compiled the best defensive team in the NFL. Some positions were harder to choose than others, but that's the fun of it. There will of course be debate and name calling, all of which will hopefully roll down people's backs.

Sure enough a few of these players will probably go down with an injury at some point of the season, but I take no blame if and when such an event happens.

If you think a certain player is more deserving of a spot on the team rather than someone else, give me a good reason why you think so. Think of this as football's version of Team USA. If we were going for a Gold medal, what would be the best defensive team we could put together?

DE: Dwight Freeney

1 of 11

Backup: Mario Williams

Dwight is still one of the most feared pass rushers in the game today. If he hadn't had the injury before the Super Bowl last year, maybe the feel good story of the decade wouldn't have happened. Mario as a backup...that's a scary team.

DT: Albert Haynesworth

2 of 11

Backup: Kris Jenkins

All the off-season stuff aside, Albert is one of of the best in the game. With a healthy Kris Jenkins behind him, Albert would actually be motived, which would be amazing when you combine it with his talent.

DT: Kevin Williams

3 of 11

Backup: Haloti Ngata

Kevin is part of an amazing defensive group in Minnesota. Working with these guys up front will be no different, and he is a great playmaker.

DE: Jared Allen

4 of 11

Backup: Justin Tuck

Jared Allen is the motor of this team. Not only is he a likeable guy, he is one of the best and most feared defenders in the league. Add him with this defensive line, and he is capable of almost anything.

OLB: DeMarcus Ware

5 of 11

Backup: Terrell Suggs

DeMarcus is one of the best in the game. His size and speed make him the ultimate nightmare for quarterbacks. Suggs is a great backup, often overlooked in Baltimore because of Ray.

MLB: Patrick Willis

6 of 11

Backup: Jon Beason

If I were starting my own team as a defensive coach in the league, and I could have any player, I don't know if I would choose anyone over Patrick Willis. The man is a complete beast, a younger version of Ray Lewis. He hasn't even hit his prime yet, which is scary. Jon Beason is even younger, and seems to be overflowing with talent as well.

OLB: Lance Briggs

7 of 11

Backup: LaMarr Woodley

Briggs is a very talented linebacker who is capable of being a great leader. Of course on this team he might not be the leader, but he has been playing next to Urlacher for years, and has even outperformed him.

CB: Derrelle Revis

8 of 11

Backup: Charles Woodson

Revis is a no-brainer here. Woodson as a backup may be getting older, but he seems to just get better with age, which is staggering, as he has put up some impressive numbers over the last few years. A veteran presense and the most talented young CB in the league, what a combo.

SS: Troy Polamalu

9 of 11

Backup: Adrian Wilson

Troy and his hair take this spot. It will be nice to see him flying around on the field again. He is obviously one of the most talented safeties in the league, and Adrian Wilson brings more size and speed to this secondary.

FS: Ed Reed

10 of 11

Backup: Bob Sanders

There is no denying that Reed is one of the most exciting playmakers in all of football. Once he gets his hands on the ball, his nose always seems to find the endzone. If Sanders can actually have a healthy season (he had one, when he was named defensive player of the year) he could provide some incredible depth to this impressive secondary.

CB: Nnamdi Asomugha

11 of 11

Backup: Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie

Personally, I think Asomugha is right up there with Revis, maybe even better. His coverage skills are elite, and that's usually with no safety help at all. DRC is very underrated, and will prove himself this year as one of the best in the league.

In closing, it was hard to leave off Brian Cushing (suspended 4 games) and Elvis Dumervil (injured). Also, Brian Orakpo was hard to leave off, but I'm sure he will make this list plenty of times in the future.
