MMA: Quick Hits August 2010

Brian PetrieAug 25, 2010

August has been a busy month for MMA fans; what with the epic fight between Silva-Sonnen, the Epic WEC card, and the Santiago-Misaki five round war. Bellator has also added some nice MMA on Thursday nights.

There is one big MMA event left and that is this Saturday in Boston, Penn-Edgar II and Boxing vs. MMA, Randy Couture-James Toney. After all the blockbuster action we have seen so far, it leaves me wondering a few things.

-- Chael Sonnen-Anderson Silva is going to be a top contender for fight of the year. It had everything a MMA fan could of asked for. Will the rematch go the same way? Should Vitor Belfort get the shot first?

--Dominck Cruz looked fantastic in his fight with Joseph Benavidez, while Benavidez looked great himself. With that being said, should Urijah Faber get the next shot since he holds the only victory over Cruz? One thing I do know for sure is those Kenny Powers K-Swiss commercials are hilarious.

--Jorge Gurgel-KJ Noons had an interesting fight this past Saturday, leaving a lot of unanswered questions. Did KJ hit Jorge after the bell? Did he land that illegal knee? Did he in fact cheat using that O2 canister? With everything that went on, I don't think the knee affected Gurgel too much; I think it was the late punch at the end of round one that did him in. KJ Noons-Nick Diaz II looks to be next. I hope KJ Noons' dad is not in KJ's corner, that guy is 8 different kinds of crazy.

-- Strikeforce-Houston was a good show. Production was good and besides Gus Johnson, the announcing was pretty good, too. The show peaked with 500,000 viewers, which tells me a Strikeforce pay per view is right around the corner.

-- King Mo did not look very "royal" Saturday night. I had King Mo winning that fight and I also had him ranked in my Light-Heavyweight top 10. But when you are fighting a guy from Black House who is Anderson Silva's training partner, do not go for body shots when he has you in the clinch. Foolish. Just foolish.

--Tim Kennedy-Ronaldo "Jacre" Souza five round title fight was an appealing fight on paper. I thought Kennedy would muscle Jacre around more, and I also thought he would have an advantage in the stand up department. None of my predictions came true, and Jacre is your new Middleweight champion.

-- Will Jason 'Mayhem' Miller ever fight Nick Diaz? I kind of hope not. The Youtube videos are becoming something I look forward too.

--Scott Jorgensen and Anthony Pettis are, without a doubt in my mind, both number one contenders. I think Pettis-Henderson is going to be a war. Same with Jorgensen-Cruz, I can see some titles changing hands whenever these fights are made.

--Jorge Santiago-Kazuo Misaki II was an unbelievable five round war. It is right now standing contender for fight of the year. It is a shame nobody has seen this fight.

-- WEC has some unreal talents. Why doesn't anybody watch??

-- When will Hector Lombard fight somebody in the top 10? He impresses me so much every time he fights, he just needs to fight a big name.

-- UFC 118 is three days away as I type this. I am giddy with excitement.

-- Does anybody understand James Toney? I mean really.

-- BJ Penn-Frankie Edgar II is going to be a lot like the first fight. I think this time around BJ is going to land cleaner shots. BJ can hurt Frankie on the feet. Frankie cannot hurt BJ. It is going to be interesting come Saturday, the 28th of August.

-- I hope Gray Maynard wins in his fight with Kenny Florian. Nothing against Kenny, I just don't want to see a guy get his third title shot, when Gray has been solid for years.

-- Randy Couture is representing MMA this weekend, I don't care what anybody says. If Randy loses, it will, without a doubt, look bad for MMA.
