Barclays Golf: Jim Furyk is Ineligible to Compete

Jim Furyk is ineligible to compete in this week’s Barclays after he overslept and missed his 7:30am pro-am tee time today at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ.

“I overslept,” Furyk said. “I always use my phone as an alarm, but it had no power this morning. I don’t know if something happened with the charger or what, but I never got it. I woke up at 7:23 and tore out of there, put a pair of pants on, and shirt…I have no belt or socks, and my shoes aren’t tied yet. I actually got into the locker room at 7:35, but I guess I had to be on the tee.”

Furyk, who entered the week ranked third in FedEx Cup points, will not be eliminated from the playoffs, but he could drop to as high as 19th, depending upon the performance of others at The Barclays.

The top-five in the point standing entering the Tour Championship can automatically win the FedEx Cup title and $10 million, if they win the event.

Although Furyk is by no means out of it, but a simple alarm clock issue could wind up costing Furyk a heck of a lot of money not only this week, but at the Tour Championship, which is set to take place September 23-26 at Eastlake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

“It is unfortunate. Knowing Jim as I do and we all do, he handled it extremely professionally and put all of the blame on himself,” said PGA Tour Rules Official Slugger White.

Furyk is a consummate professional, so we wouldn’t expect anything different from him.

However, one could just imagine this consummate professional drop-kicking his cell phone across his hotel room upon being told that this minuscule piece of faulty technology had potentially cost him millions of dollars.

“The rules are rules,” Furyk said.
