Five Reasons Sonnen vs. Silva II Is Happening
Since there has been a lot of controversy recently regarding this fight, I have decided to explain why it is happening. There are several reason, but I have tried to narrow it down to five top.
Does Chael Sonnen actually deserve an immediate rematch with Anderson Silva? I don't know, but this is why he has it.
5. The Fans
1 of 6
In the press conference Dana announced that this is the fight the fans want. Maybe this is true, depending on which site you are looking at, but from what I've seen on here most people are against this.
Sonnen gained a lot of fans during the build up to the fight and afterward. He literally did everything he said he would except win.
I'm sure there are tons of fans that really want that immediate rematch.
4. Lack Of Competition

The Middleweight division has been quite lackluster for a long time. Although it continues to grow everyday, it still seems to lack top name opponents.
For example, the division has heavy handed Vitor Belfort who hasn't fought since 2009 and can't afford waiting a while longer to land a fight with Silva. It also has the talented Yushin Okami who always seems to lose the fight that would get him the title shot.
Then you have Michael Bisping, Akiyama, Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva. All four are very talented and edging closer and closer to a title shot. Bisping and Akiyama are still a little distant, especially considering that Akiyama lost his last fight. Leben has won his last two fights in impressive fashion, but has already been embarrassed by the champion. Wanderlei has had problems recently on pulling the trigger and jumping in for some finishes. Wanderlei won his middleweight debut, but not in the way everyone expected him too. The division also has Alan Belcher, but no one seems to be showing much love for him. He was recently pulled from a fight with Demian Maia due to being injured.
Therefore, Sonnen has recieved the opportunity to have a rematch with Anderson Silva. While the Middlweight division settles itself to see who is the number one contender, Sonnen will see who the champion is.
3. Money
3 of 6
This fight makes money, plain and simple. The UFC realizes that this fight will add up in dollars. Sonnen will jump back into the game with his trash talk, and Silva will wonder who he is. The promotion up to the fight will be very fun to watch, considering their history.
Will Sonnen pull back on his trash talk or will he continue to fire at the champion? After the original matchup, in the post fight interview he said that if Dana White would remove the podium he would be fighting Silva at that moment.
Sonnen is a very intelligent man who knows how to promote a fight, and he will do, once again, a wonderful job of doing so. This fight will make tons of money, and the UFC knows that. Sonnen did deserve a rematch somewhere down the line, but this may be a little early. We will see what happens, but money will definently be rolling in.
2. Silva's injury
4 of 6
Following their first fight, Anderson Silva talked about his rib injury. He was injured before the fight and advised not to step in the octagon. He did anyways and payed for it, by being dominated for four and a half rounds.
Silva did finally pull it out with a triangle in the fifth round. This rib injury forces Silva to wait until January or February before he can fight again. This cancels a possible fight with Vitor Belfort, because he is fighting later this year.
The injury places him in alignment for an immediate rematch with Sonnen.
1. Silva's Comeback Victory
5 of 6
Sonnen's four and a half rounds of domination during their last meeting before falling to Silva in the fifth pose a strong argument for an immediate rematch.
Sonnen was on his way to being the new Middleweight champion before he was submitted in the last round. Sonnen's wrestling dominated Silva every round with easy takedowns, he even knocked down Silva in the fight.
Dana White claims that this is the fight the fans our asking for, therefore they will receive it. He doesn't know that there are several people that are totally against this fight happening.
I want this fight to happen in the future, but an immediate rematch isn't really what I expected. Although, from the earlier slides who else should get the next shot?
This should be a great fight with a bunch of action, and a lot of pre-fight hype. Whether you agree or disagree with the fight, this fight is something to look forward too.
