Auburn Football 2010: Injuries and Position Battle Updates for August

Kevin McGradyAug 24, 2010

Injuries are mounting after last Saturday’s scrimmage, where mostly freshmen were focused on. While none of the injuries seem that serious, there is really no way to gauge. Coach Chizik calls a broken finger day-to-day and he calls a tweaked ankle day-to-day.

Fullback Leadrious Phillips was in a boot and on crutches today. It would not seem to be a serious injury, but who knows?

Wide receiver DeAngelo Benton has the brace off his hand and appears to be getting closer to returning.

Wide receiver Antonio Goodwin appears to be injured, but no word on the nature of the injury or prognosis.

El Toro Freeman was practicing, but in a limited controlled fashion.

Joel Bonomolo was back practicing, but will go to scout team while he catches up.

Possible Position Assignments

The backup quarterback appears to be Barrett Trotter for the Arkansas State game. A.J. Greene appears to be leading at right tackle for the moment.

Freshman Steven Clark and Senior Ryan Shoemaker are still battling for starting punter.

Quindarius Carr seems to be the punt returner for the moment with Darvin Adams and Jonathan Mincy behind him.

Demond Washington and Onterio McCalebb are the lead returners and will appear with a secondary returner.

The scout team has been announced for the Arkansas State game. This means the depth chart should firm up soon.

Shaun Kitchens and Trovon Reed are not on the scout team. This would seem to indicate that they have worked their way into some playing time.

Don’t put much stock into what players are on the scout team, it appears the scout team will be fluid this year. It is not to be taken as a seasonal assignment.

Articles of Interest

Andy Bitter wrote an excellent piece on penalties.

The Birmingham News has a great piece on today’s practice.

Notes of Interest

Special teams seems to be solidifying. Cody Parkey and Wes Byrum are still battling for the kickoff position. Ryan Shoemaker and Steven Clark are battling for starting punter.

Auburn fans can look for both coverage and returns to be areas of improvement this year. This has been a focus during practice this August.
