The Media Loves To Hate Arsenal: Walcott, Victim Of the Tabloid Press

Hasmat MustunAug 24, 2010

Arsenal thrashed Blackpool six nil at the weekend, and Theo Walcott bagged a hat-trick. But was it enough to persuade pundits and the media that Arsenal could become title challengers? NO!

Walcott put in a marvellous performance described as "electric" by Arsene Wenger. A man who admittedly was relieved to see the youngster finally prove his potential. Walcott did everything Arsenal fans wanted him to do for a very long time now.

He used his pace to devastating effects by taking on the defenders over and over again. He ran at defenders, and put in decent crosses into the box.

He cut in from the wing to double up as a forward and scored two fantastic goals from those moves, but yet again Walcott was battered by a few comments from the press.

Alan Hansen shocked the whole nation when he publicly layed into the young Englishmen on MOTD. He said Walcott was only good when he did not have to think because it is his instincts making him play.

He went on to describe how Walcott does not have a footballing brain because when given time, he makes the wrong choices.

Okay, so Theo has been doing that a lot last season, but against Blackpool, there are only two occasions when he misplaced a cross. I seem to understand that he is still 21 and has years ahead of him to improve as a footballer.

If these are the only things he needs to do then Arsenal fans should start the party as Walcott can only get better and better. Those critics will surely make him more determined to prove everyone wrong.

The only decent perspective coming out of this weekend was Ian Wright coming out to defend Theo for the shocking statements made by Hansen.

But this is what journalism and pundits is all about—opinions.

There are no facts in what they say. Columnists live their lives by making opinions and try to make everyone believe that what they are saying is the truth. Chelsea win six nil against a newly promoted team and everyone is saying they are champions.

Arsenal beat a newly promoted team and everyone says it's only Blackpool!

The media adore bashing Arsenal right, left and center. And the reason for this, well maybe because of the lack of English players in the team. Arsenal have always been overlooked as the team with foreign players. The Gunners do not get enough credit when they deserve it.

Some papers stated over the weekend that Arsenal scoring six was good but they should have scored more goals. Some said Arsenal cannot win the title because of the lack of fire power.

Is it me or do people need to realise that only two games have been played.

It is way to easy for people to make dumb comments without really thinking about them. As far as I see it there are more than two teams for the title race.

Chelsea and United are the usual favorites, but Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham will surely push for the top prize.

Nevertheless, it seems as though Arsenal and Walcott cannot win with the press. Arsene Wenger's men should turn around against all media formats and enjoy their free flowing football.

Hopefully come the end of the season they will have answered all their critics.
