Cleveland Browns Roster Cuts: No Chance Colt McCoy on the Bubble

Daniel WolfAug 24, 2010

The Cleveland Browns used their third round pick on Texas quarterback Colt McCoy in this past 2010 NFL Draft.

Much was told to the media regarding the process within the Browns' war room on draft weekend. When it came time to pick McCoy the biggest news was that president Mike Holmgren was patient and knew he had to hold out for as long as possible from picking a quarterback in the draft in order to fill holes in other areas of the roster.

Then when the Browns were on the clock in the third and McCoy was still available, Holmgren flexed some of his team president power and told, not asked but told, general manager Tom Heckert that he had to pull the trigger and take McCoy at that moment.

It was also reported that both Heckert and head coach Eric Mangini were on the fence regarding McCoy, but they cannot hold anything over the guy who has a deep resume of quarterbacks including two current Hall of Famers and another guaranteed one.

So McCoy is now Holmgren's newest quarterback to groom into the next leader of the Browns, but so far in preseason, McCoy has struggled and looked like well, a rookie.

But that is a good thing because this is not Charlie Frye or Brady Quinn and a hometown boy who has already been deemed the savior of football in the city.

McCoy is indeed a rookie and a third-stringer at best in 2010 and possibly in 2011 too, since he is behind veterans that know their roles and know they are also not the future in Cleveland.

Starter Jake Delhomme knows he is the mentor and backup Seneca Wallace knows he is nothing more than Delhomme's backup and Cyclone formation player barring any injuries to Delhomme this season and perhaps next season as well.

That leaves McCoy as the true rookie and student to learn the game from the sidelines.

So he has struggled, but does that mean he is on the roster bubble when roster cuts hit?

Not a chance.

Don't tell that to Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer's Browns beat reporter Tony Grossi.

"Players who appear to need good showings in the last two games to make the roster include linebacker David Veikune, tight ends Robert Royal and Alex Smith, running backs Chris Jennings and James Davis, quarterbacks Brett Ratliff and Colt McCoy, and receiver Carlton Mitchell," wrote Grossi.

Are you serious?

McCoy won't make the roster?

This is the perfect example of why Browns reporting has severely lacked any real credibility for several years especially when you say that Holmgren's personal draft choice at quarterback will possibly get cut in preseason.

Who should get cut is Grossi for making such a claim and then actually thinking it would be okay to publish it too.

Time to pack your bags Grossi because the pink slip is coming sooner than later and you're getting cut and McCoy is going no where.
