How To Draft For Fantasy Football 2010

Jake BurstynAug 23, 2010

It's the most wonderful time of the YEAR!!!!

Yes, my friends fantasy football at its finest

If you are having some trouble with your draft strategy, then you chose the right slideshow today.

Don't be afraid to use this as a reference on draft day either

Or you could just consider this more opinionated crap on this site... but what do I know... I have won two years straight... no biggie

Here is a breakdown of the draft

Enjoy...

Round 1 The House

1 of 5

Most likely you'll be in a 8-12 team league so we'll go by 10 teams for now

This is my top ten for this year... so you will get at least one of these guys on draft day

  1. Chris Johnson
  2. Adrian Peterson
  3. Ray Rice
  4. Maurice Jones-Drew
  5. Andre Johnson
  6. Aaron Rodgers
  7. Michael Turner
  8. Steven Jackson
  9. Drew Brees
  10. Larry Fitzgerald

A couple notes so people don't freak out here

Frank Gore is a poison... let someone else draft him... he is the definition of injury risk

I also just straight up hate Randy Moss... any guy who could post up negative points if he just doesn't feel like playing scares me

Ray Rice is ahead of MJD because defenses will key in on MJD all the time because he is practically all they have... meanwhile Ray "Sizzle" has a similar build, but also breakaway speed... O yeah, the Ravens just added some guy named Anquan so you can assume that the passing game will scare some people now. (Did I mention I drafted Ray Rice in both of my leagues last year? I didn't? Well, it paid off)

Brees is better than A-Rod... but this is also fantasy football... so in your fantasy league, the man with the NEW A-Rod will be better

Everyone, I mean EVERYONE hates on SJ... I think this is his career year. Sam Bradford could take off that pressure that is put on SJ for the Rams to win.

Rounds 2-3 The Foundation

2 of 5

11. Frank Gore

12. Rashard Mendenhall

13. Reggie Wayne

14. Brandon Marshall

15. Cedric Benson

16. Shonn Greene

17. Miles Austin

18. Randy Moss

19. Peyton Manning

20. Roddy White

21. Ryan Grant

22. Calvin Johnson

23. Jamaal Charles

24. Ryan Matthews

25. Matt Schaub

26. Knowshon Moreno

27. DeSean Jackson

28. Beanie Wells

29. Steve Smith

30. Tony Romo

I kind of set this up so each team would be balanced.

But if you follow these guidelines, you could easily start off your team with a good foundation.

I told you Frank Gore and Randy Moss shouldn't be taken... However, if they fall in your lap in the second round and you think it's alright... go for it.

I believe it is crucial to have 2... maybe just 1 running back by the end of the first 3 rounds

Getting a premier quarterback is also detrimental to having fantasy success nowadays

So after the first three rounds your team should look like any of these options:

QB,RB,WR    RB,RB,WR   or   RB,WR,WR      (not particularly in that order

Rounds 4-6 The Furniture

3 of 5

Alright... This is going to be up to good judgement from now on... not player by player anymore

If you haven't taken a QB yet... I suggest you do it now... Great producers like Philip Rivers should still be here

I'm telling you that you must... MUST!!!!.....have 2 RB's by now, if not 3

Also, 2 WR on your roster is imperative to have at this point, especially in PPR league...

Hopefully you are set on RB's for a while because the position drops off considerably at this point

If you don't have an elite TE (Which you should get at this point) ... Fear not... there will be plenty of starting caliber guys later (I do recommend Clark, Gates, Davis, or Celek if you do)

RB's to target: Jonathan Stewart, Ronnie Brown, Jahvid Best

WR's to target: Marques Colston, Michael Crabtree, Wes Welker

Just a few names that these rounds will offer you:

Justin Forsett

LaDanian Tomlinson

Pierre Garcon

Johnny Knox

Jermichael Finley

Owen Daniels

Kellen Winslow Jr.

These are the type of guys that make the difference between good team and best team.

Translation: These guys make CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER fantasy teams

Rounds 11-16 The Insurance

5 of 5

DO NOT TAKE A KICKER UNTIL THE LAST ROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that that's out of the way...

D/ST should be taken in this range as well... Don't worry about getting the best defense... I usually have a different defense every other week any way... I got lucky last year... I had: 49ers D when they scored 44 points, Eagles D when they had 40+ points and two other D/ST when they scored 40+ points

This is in the same season, and the same team!

I recommend a top 15 D to draft just to be safe though

This is where players with upside should be taken

Including a backup QB... I recommend having only two on your roster at a time... If you got a lower tier guy like Jay Cutler (ugh!) to be your starter... Get a guy like Joe Flacco (someone with upside ranked just lower than him)

Some young WR's in positions to succeed: Demaryius Thomas, Mohammed Massaquoi, Laurent Robinson, Arrelious Benn, Golden Tate, Jacoby Jones, Louis Murphy and Devin Thomas

Your starting TE (If needed) Visanthe Shiancoe, Zach Miller (OAK), Heath Miller, John Carlson, and Dustin Keller (These can also be utilized as solid backups for bye week fill-ins and trade bait)

Everyone who reads this article needs to get Ahmad Bradshaw... trust me... Brandon Jacobs has gotten soft... Bradshaw is in the perfect position to become the starter, no scratch that, AN ELITE FANTASY RB

If he cannot do this (Which I almost guarantee he will) You can come to this article in February and leave the nastiest comment you can think of
