Anthony Armstrong Leads Small Receiver Revolution in Washington

Brandon KeenerAug 23, 2010

Currently there are ten wide receivers listed on the Washington Redskins' roster, according to the team's website.

Seven of them are six feet tall or less.

So how do the Skins compare against other teams in their division? Smaller by a fairly large margin.

The Giants have only four receivers below six feet.

The Eagles have five, including two that are listed as six foot tall.

Their rivals, the Cowboys? One. He is listed as five feet eleven inches.

For an offense that has been begging for a big-play caliber player, the Redskins may be looking for a big bang in a small package.

Anthony Armstrong has made his mark this offseason on the Redskins camp and is currently leading the team in catches, yards, longest reception, and touchdowns catches.

Armstrong is one of those feel good stories that the NFL is full of. As a player in the Intense Football League and Arena Football League, he pushed his way to the top. Still, Armstrong has not had the chance to prove himself at the NFL level, until now.

Catching more than just passes but the attention of fans and fellow teammates alike, Armstrong is pushing hard to make his first roster spot.

"Armstrong has been doing a great job," new Redskins QB Donovan McNabb says. "We all have the confidence in Armstrong that he’ll be able to make the play.”

If you have watched football in the past 20 years, you know who Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is and what he has done with the Denver Broncos.

You also may recognize his ability to take on smaller players and get the most out of them, most notably Eddie Royal.

Armstrong is the type of player teams need. Just a simple, humble guy who is looking to help his team win and earn his spot on the depth chart.

“I feel like I’m playing my best, and that’s all I can do,” Armstrong said. “I don’t make the cuts, I don’t decide who is on the team. I just have to do my job.”
