NFL Preseason: The Top 10 Suprises So Far

Spencer CarlsonAug 23, 2010

There have been many surprises this preseason thus far, but here's my Top Ten.

10. Kamerion Wimbley: Outside linebacker for the Oakland Raiders acquired in a trade from the Cleveland Browns this offseason. Had four sacks in a game against the Chicago Bears the other night and showed good pass rush skills (something at times wasn't seen in Cleveland). Time will tell if Wimbley will be the real deal at linebacker in a upgraded Raiders defense or that it was one of those nights and the Bears Offensive Line is weak.

9. Fred Taylor: Old man Fred Taylor!!! Former Jacksonville Jaguars star running back now New England Patriot has come in this preseason in two games and looks fresh and looks like he has his legs back at 34 years old. Battling for the running back job in New England this year, Taylor sure has made a case that he wants the starting job.

8. Jake Delhomme: Coming into Cleveland after being released by the Carolina Panthers after a eight touchdown 18 interception season. In his first two preseason games with the Browns, Delhomme has looked very sharp going 18/23 193 yds., 1 TD, O INT, and a 116.1 passer rating thus far. Browns are really hoping Delhomme can keep it up and have a productive season out of the QB position.

7. Jabar Gaffney: Gaffney came into training camp hoping to get No. 1 WR spot for the Denver Broncos now that Brandon Marshall is with the Miami Dolphins. Well hes showing why he deserves it with his performance thus far this preseason. He has eight catches for 133 yards with a six catch 98 yd. performance the other night. He is giving Eddie Royal a run for his money.

6. Dallas Cowboys lack of offense: Dallas had a good year last year and one of the better offenses in the league. Three games into the preseason the Cowboys offense has looked very confused and not moving the ball well down the field. Now it's only preseason so no time to panic, but hope they figure it out before Week 1.

5. Jahvid Best: The Detroit Lions rookie running back has certainly locked up the starting running back spot for the Lions with his play in Training Camp and Preseason. He looks very quick and can move inside and outside the tackles. He could be a household name in the NFL by the end of the year.

4. Wes Welker: Coming off knee surgery Wes Welker has come back and looks like the 100 catch per year wideout that he use to be. He soon will become Tom Brady's favorite target again and showing no problem from his knee surgery. Making Patriot fans very happy.

3. Buffalo Bills Offense: I know I'm surprised too. In two games though the number one offense has looked good. CJ Spiller and Lee Evans have looked ready since they stepped on the field. Now what we need to see is if Trent Edwards can actually stay healthy and perform well during the regular season not just the preseason.

2. Ryan Matthews: Everyone was wondering if Matthews can step and fill in the shoes that LT left in San Diego and this preseason he has met expectations. He has great burst and can go in between the tackles and looks like he will be the answer at running back for the San Diego Chargers.

1. Victor Cruz: Victor wasn't even known before the preseason and now everyone knows him. The undrafted free agent from Umass got a chance with the New York Giants and he showed everything he has. Eight catches, 175 yards, and three TD's in first two games shows great hand/eye coordination and decent speed. One thing is for sure he earned himself a roster spot.
