Grittin’ My Teeth

Pardon My Bias Bleacher ReportAug 22, 2010

You know what’s got me grittin’ my teeth…

  • This obsession with the Dallas Cowboys. I keep hearing how they are the favorites to win the NFC but I just don’t see it. They won their division last year but it is not going to be as easy as most people think this upcoming season. The Philadelphia Eagles may have lost an All-Pro QB in Donovan McNabb but his replacement, Kevin Kolb, doesn’t look half bad. The Eagles’ organization obviously has a great amount of faith in him and believe he is the team’s future. With his strong arm and the play-making ability of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, this offense could put up huge numbers. The New York Giants could strike  and go on a Super Bowl run at any moment and the Washington Redskins have reloaded with McNabb and Mike Shanahan and are looking to make a large leap. These three teams are just in the Cowboys’ division. Within the conference we still have to account for the defending champions, the New Orleans Saints, the re-Favred Minnesota Vikings, and the up-and-coming Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons. This is not going to be an easy feat for the Cowboys and I honestly would not put any faith in them. They have yet to make the NFC title game under Tony Romo and I am sure Jerry Jones will be putting a vast amount of pressure on them to make the to Super Bowl considering it will be taking place at Cowboy Stadium. My opinion: Quit with this Cowboy obsession because they are not that good.

  • The New York Yankees’ payroll. Their 2010 payroll is $206,333,389, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they have the best record in all of baseball. What really annoys me is that the Yankees get so much praise for being such a great team, but they really have no choice when they are paying their players that much money. The teams that deserve the glorification are the ones that perform well under poor financial situations for example the Cincinnati Reds ($72,386,544), Tampa Bay Rays ($71,923,471), Texas Rangers ($55,250,545) and the San Diego Padres ($37,799,300). These teams are all over .550 for the season while starting the year in the bottom half of the team payroll list. The Rangers (27th) and Padres (29th) fall in the bottom four of this list. It is amazing how these teams have the ability to compete just as well as the Yankees while paying less than half of that of the New York Yankee payroll. The San Diego Padres have a payroll about 5.45 times less than the Yankees yet are the 3rd best team in the league and are only 2.5 games behind them. The Rays have a payroll about 2.86 times less than the Yankees yet are only trailing by one game. Don’t get me wrong, the Yankees are a great team but my opinion: they don’t deserve as much credit as they get because when you pay your players that much money, you should have the best record in baseball. The praise needs to be given to those teams that can build a squad that will exceed expectations and perform at high standards while keeping a low payroll for financial reasons.
